We have an outstanding opportunity for a Third Mate to be responsible for safe navigation of the ship and directing deck operations. Serve as third mate, and periodically serve as second mate and chief mate, of an ocean research ship of approximately 3052 gross tons. Stand bridge watches operating and navigating the ship; direct maintenance of life saving equipment and rescue boat; requisition life saving equipment; in charge of bridge watch entering and leaving port; stand security watches when required; teach courses in seamanship and other marine specialties; perform related duties as required.

This position provides a unique opportunity to work in a state-of-the-art research facility.

Legal Requirement
A U.S. Coast Guard Third Mate’s license valid for operation of an inspected motor vessel of unlimited tonnage, upon ocean waters.

Additional requirements include
# Valid STCW certificate
# TWIC
# UWCG Merchant Mariners document

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired:
# A U.S. Coast Guard Chief Mate’s license valid for operation of an inspected motor vessel of unlimited tonnage, upon ocean waters. Valid STCW certificate, TWIC and USCG Merchant Mariners document.
# Bachelor’s degree from an accredited sea service academy with five years sea duty as a deck officer; in the absence of a formal degree, equivalent work experience.
# Prefer Chief Mate experience on a similar research vessel.
# Candidates must have good personnel management skills and a good understanding of the ship’s emergency equipment, drill procedures, operation of cranes, winches, mooring systems, dynamic positioning and excellent ship handling skills.
