MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a United States Coast Guard Master License.
Function of Work:
To operate and pilot state owned ferry vessels that are certified as inspected vessels under United States Coast Guard regulations.
Level of Work:
Supervisor.
Supervision Received:
Broad review from the Marine Operations Superintendent.
Supervision Exercised:
Direct line over Marine Chief Engineers and Marine Engineers, Marine Oilers, and Marine Deckhands.
Location of Work:
Department of Transportation and Development; vessels operating on the Mississippi River and Calcasieu Ship Channel.
Job Distinctions:
Differs from Marine Operator by assignment of duties on board an inspected vessel as defined by United States Coast Guard regulations, requiring a Master’s License in addition to a Pilot’s License.
Differs from Marine Master 1 by full independent performance of duties.
Differs from Marine Master 2 by complexity and location of work.
Differs from Marine Operations Superintendent 1 and 2 by the lack of overall responsibility for the operations at geographic location.
Supervises and pilots ferry carrying vehicles and passengers on the Mississippi River or Calcasieu Ship Channel.
Maintains operating logs and submits reports.
Supervises crew on assigned shift, through assigning and reviewing work, and evaluation of subordinates.
Conducts fire and collision drills on a regular basis.
Inspects all equipment, machinery, rigging, and gear aboard vessel and orders needed repairs.
Orders fuel, material, and supplies for the vessel.
Assures that the vessel maintains schedule.
