A 7,600 DWT general cargo ship carrying ammonium sulfate is hard aground in Turkey’s Dardanelles strait.
Turkey’s General Directorate of Coastal Safety reports that the Panama-flagged MV Ibrahim Konan ran aground overnight Tuesday while heading south through the strait near the town of Eceabat, Turkey. The ship is carrying ammonium sulfate, a chemical compound used as a fertilizer, according to the General Directorate of Coastal Safety.
The incident is the second in area in just the last few days. On Sunday, the Celestyal Cruises cruise ship Celestyal Crystal collided with the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker, MT STI Pimlico, causing extensive damage to both ships and some minor pollution but no injuries among the 852 passengers onboard the cruise ship.
The Dardanelles strait, or Çanakkale Bo?az?, connects the Aegean Sea with the Sea of Marmara and the Bosporus.
