MORRO BAY, CA (April 23, 2014)- A new website, TheTeakRail.com, created by a professional mariner and an accomplished executive chef and restaurant owner, is filling the much needed gap in expert reviews for marine equipment and everything else a sailor could want.

John Konrad and Chef Leonard Gentieu, two California sailors with years of diverse marine experience, started the site to give a sailor’s perspective on the gear every waterman needs.

“We thought it would be helpful to have a one-stop shop Mecca for mariners looking to find the best marine products,” said Konrad.

Konrad is co-founder of gCaptain, and author of Fire on the Horizon, the untold story of the Gulf oil spill disaster. He graduated from SUNY Maritime College, and is a USCG licensed Master of Unlimited Tonnage.

Chef Leonard Gentieu, or Chef Len, as he’s known on the site, graduated from the Culinary Institute of America, is a Guniess World Record holder and an award-winning chef and restaurateur with a passion for sailing. For the past ten years, Gentieu has fused his passion for food and sailing into the Papagallo II, a 72-foot yacht that takes five-star dinner cruises out of Morro Bay.

What is the best knife for use on deck? What’s the best galley knife? What is the best PLB EPIRB? Which antenna will allow me to connect to free wifi hotspots when my ship arrives in a foreign port? Konrad says that mariners frequently ask this type of questions on the gCaptain forum but are forced to sift through dozens of answers. “TheTeakRail combs through the gear recommended by gCaptain forum readers” says Konrad. “We also test individual items and asks industry leaders for their expert advice. Our extensive research allows us to pick one item in each product category… a single piece of marine equipment which will best serve you in the harsh marine environment.

Konrad and Gentieu aimed to make the website a go-to place for expertise in every field of marine product. The website offers reviews of what is the best product in each product category, as to simplify the shopping process. Instead of having reviews for multiple similar products, they choose the best product after days of testing.

“This is the water gear we’ve learned to count on over the years during our lives at sea,” Gentieu said. “We know what works and what doesn’t in a demanding marine environment. I wish this site had been around when I was learning the ropes. It would have saved me a lot of time and hassle.”

TheTeakRail.com is for all boaters, enthusiasts, and professional mariners. Users can sort articles by the type of vessel they have- or are dreaming about. Articles cover everything from the best emergency evacuation service, to the best galley knife, to the best way to make the perfect cup of coffee, from beans to grinder to brewer to storage.

In partnership with gCaptain, TheTeakRail articles that pertain to the best professional maritime equipment will be posted here on the gCaptain blog. “TheTeakRail has conducted hundreds of hours of research and product testing resulting in dozens of high quality articles.” Says Konrad ”By personally endorsing the reviews gCaptain gets to publish TeakRail articles and TheTeakRail gets access to professional mariners who use the gear on a daily basis at sea. I believe the partnership is a win-win for both sites.”

NB: gCaptain will publish TheTeakRail articles but does not endorse individual products but is under no obligation to publish reviews of gear which don’t meet the highest standards of excellence. gCaptain promises to keep a keen eye on the quality of articles produced under this partnership agreement.
