Foreign Flag?

Hey, I was considering going foreign flag for part of my second sea period as a cadet... Would anyone recommend this? What would you consider the Pros and Cons?

Seems like all the foreign flag vessels have the work in the US right now. Do you mind working in the Gulf of Mexico?

Are you sure you can even do that? I would ask my ATR before I waste much energy on it but that's just me.

Going on a foreign flag ship can provide many benefits (how to make things work without having the right, or any, spares). However, from somebody paying for your education, it would be wise to go on a US flag ship, as that is where you will be working (and possibly relieving me) in the future.

The only foreign flag ship they would likely consider is an LNG. Go ahead IF you want to pursue that after graduation AND enjoy working for peanuts. Then again, some 3rd engineers are happy with $50K/yr...

They've approved foreign flag sea years before. A classmate of mine did it without much problem. He did his sea year with Cunard I think.

If I were a cadet again I'd love to do a sea year on a tramp bulker. I don't think there are any left in the US Flag, but plenty foreign flag.

Thanks a lot for the replies. Honestly I wouldn't really enjoy staying in the Gulf haha and I doubt I would want to go foreign flagged at all after graduation, but since I'll be on two different ships this sailing period, I thought this would be a good experience to try for one of the ships. And yes the ATRs mentioned this was possible this year at the start of sea year lectures, but I still have to meet with my ATR to see if this is still an option.

I actually went on a US flagged tramp bulker my first sea period with Liberty Maritime. It was a pretty good experience. Israel to Turkey to Houston to Sudan and finally to the shipyard in Singapore.

Hi! In the post above, I read that your friend did his cruise on Cunard... Can you tell me more about how he did it on a cruise line? Has anyone else done this on anyother cruise lines?
