Does anyone know what Moran Norfolk Va. has for a schedule? 14-14, 7-7, etc? Also does anyone know what starting pay is for an AB there?

I have applied there about 4 times in the last 1 1/2 years. I am also a former employee who left in good grace. They dont seem to be hireing right now. I think most of their boats are 7/7 a few are 14/14. When I was there the boats were in good shape. Moran seems to care more about they way their boats are maintained than their competition.

ive applied there as well for an ab/tankerman position, but im a little confused. do you have to apply to each moran division or is there a blanket application?

on the moran careers page you can select all of the locations and in about a year they will send you an email confirming they got your application.

Morans benefits are really good. The tractor tugs work 7 and 7. the rest of the fleet is 14 and 14. They have been hiring ab's, but they are all grads with 3rd's licenses...not sure why.

Why does everyone keep busting the CG's balls about making hawsepipers extinct. The IMO/STCW requires the coursework for upgrading your license not the CG. The US is signatory to the STCW so it is only natural that we comply. We are actually lagging behind in being fully STCW compliant. That fact puts us and our jobs at jeopardy more so than a few extra classes. Imagine the situation if foreign states stopped recognizing our credentials. If you don't like it work Inland or Great Lakes.

What I don't like is when I go overseas and see these 'fully compliant' officers and crew running a tub of rust like a horse wagon endangering everyone nearby. Compliant my ass! We aren't perfect but next to some of the things I've seen we aren't too bad.

Moran's benefits are excellent. Their top tier health insurance plan covers more than most insurances could dream of and the company pays like 75% of the premium. The 401k is also really good. If you put in 5% they match 4% and they also throw in an extra 3% regardless of how much you put in. (So if you put in 1% they match 1% and add an additional 3%.) Plus there is a discretionary that they add at the end of the year that is variable but tends to be around 1.5%. (The pay working in the harbor sucks balls though...)

Exactly right, It's not the USCG. No one said you can't still come up via the hause. However it will cost so much these days to do it most won't spend the cash to do so. Especially if there are few jobs to be had, Personally, I can't blame a company for employing licensed graduates as ABs. I would do the same if I sat in management.

If you look at the new policy letter yo will find you DO NOT have to do all the classes that were once required,,,policy letter 11-07

I think you only need 5 classes now and the seatime/tonnage for a third mate license

According to the new policy letter you must either take the courses OR complete the necessary assessments in lieu of. Some classes are required such as advanced firefighting & radar. And take the applicable examinations.

It provides more options, but isn't necessarily going to be any easier.

I'm certain I can complete celestial navigation without taking a course. However, finding someone in my company that is willing to do the assessments is going to be a challenge. It's not something they use everyday, so it's going to take a bit of extra effort on their part.

I would guess that those vessels arent fully compliant either. Lol. What i meant was that while I am sure Ougodeego will recognize our license It would be nice if nations like Great Britain and Norway would continue to do so as well.

Last I heard it was $226 a day but that was in 2008. Also that was for towing usually assist boats like in Norfolk pay less.
