    Default ATB Question...

Out of curiosity, on average, does an ATb have a specific route it always takes? For example, assuming a 14/14 schedule, will an ATB only have one route such as NYC -> Maine then back? Or will you have a different schedule each time and wont know where your going once you get to the boat?

Some tug and barges (both ATB married units and conventional tug barges) have long term charters, some are 'spot market charters. Generally the long term charters are completing the customers desire to move a particular type of cargo between (usually) a couple dozen load and discharge berths. However some cycle between 2 to 5 usual docks.

Spot charters can be anywhere, anytime.

BUT, it can change at the drop of a hat, at any time, with little or no notice.

That is one of the things I like about this job. There is a 'certainty' I will go to work 9 days from now. BUT I really don't know where. I think Mr Saltere used to say: Variety is the spice of life!
