All time for an unlimited license must be on vessels over 200 GRT. If the tug was under 200 GRT, as many are, it would not be acceptable sea time. See 46 CFR 11.402(a) and 11.431(a)
Out of curiosity, does tug time count towards an unlimited license? I was under the impression you were allowed to use up to 6 months of it towards advancement. I have an unlimited 2nd, getting ready for C/O, and having trouble finding work on an unlimited-sized vessel. I figured I could always work on a tug until something else comes along, but don't know if that time is god for anything or if would all be a waste, sea-time-wise.
