New Years log

Does anyone still write their New Years log in rhyme? Looking threw my ship's 01 January logs for 0000 I don't see any.

I stand the 0000 watch this new year so I'll post my log on New Years Day to gCaptain (minus anything security related.)

Google "new year log rhyme" for some background and examples. I think it's more a Navy/Coast Guard tradition but I've seen commercial ship logs that do it.

I love the rhyming mid-watch log on New Year's Day! Just checked thru our logs, only one mate has written one, in 2009. A few captains I have sailed with have written in thier night orders "no rhyming logs and no blowing of whistle at midnight". I remember looking thru old logs onboard USNS SIRIUS and SATURN and there were tons of great, real original New Year's Day mid logs, seems like it used to be standard to do it.

I've seen some good logs on New Year's over the years. Unfortunately I have no poetry in me. I do write 2400 31 Dec. Old year ends. and 0001 1 Jan. New year begins though.

When I was sailing I might have interpreted that to be a challenge to write a log entry in (non-rhyming) Haiku.

Not New Years or in the official log but what the hell, I was bored and it was christmas.

Twas

Twas the night before christmas and all through the ship

We were all just wishing this was our last trip.

No stockings, no presents, no rum and no beer.

Santa gets seasick so I doubt he'll come near.

I told him the only remedy, it takes only one lime.

But words like "puking" are kinda hard to rhyme.

You take the lime, cut it in half and run it Allllll around your ass.

When you taste the lime flavor, your misery is almost past.

The Chandler sent a turkey, looks more like a dog.

We need freakin Rudolph to get thru this pea soup fog.

I kinda remember Christmas. Is that when the bunny hides the eggs?

All I want for Christmas is some better sea legs.

So while you are enjoying your Christmas and all the joys of land

Don't forget the sailor in your life who's eating turkey out of a can.

If you see that bastard Santa give him a message for me.

Next year instead of sending us winds in a gale, I want me sitting under my family's tree!!
