Layoffs for Seacor

Just curious if anybody has heard about Seacor laying off a bunch of their employees. I just heard a rumor stating somewhere around 200 or 2,000. If so I have to wonder how the rest of the supply boat companies are doing.

I couldn't get a helicopter last week, caught a ride on a crew boat and the captain's cap read Seacor. As it obviously wasn't a Seacor boat I asked why he had it on and he said he'd been laid off. I didn't press the issue so maybe it's true that lay offs are starting. I hope not but wouldn't be surprised.

I have to say...I hope the layoffs don't get contagious. I just bought a house!! I work for XXXXXXX and they sent around a memo a few months back stating "Don't worry...were in our best position ever. Things are Great, etc, etc, etc." I really hope that's the case. I have been doing this my whole life. It would suck to go to McDonalds now...and get laid off from there too!!!

I'll go out on a limb and say you'd probably be safer than most as Chouest doesn't have to report quarterly earnings to stockholders. My guess is they'll tough it out so they don't have to worry about finding trustworthy people once things pick back up.
On the other hand a lot of the increased building and manning in the GOM was due to the upcoming double hull rule and not necessarily entirely due to increased demand. So, lay-offs may occur but that is the nature of the offshore oil bidness !

Seacor has been lately shedding its fleet of all its smaller vessels. Perhaps it is the crews from those boats who are getting axed because they might not have licenses big enough to move to the other larger vessels in thier fleet.

I work in the New Orleans area and there was a guy that I spoke to thaat was taking some training classes and said he was layed off from Seacor. Who knows huh? Hope everything goes okay for you

Not looking good for us guys on the casino vessels here in La. We are most likely going to get the AXE in Jan. 2010. Please tell me that there is no slowdown in the GOM.

I can confirm Seacor has been laying off Captains and crew.
I was layed off on Feb 2. Last count that I heard is 180 personnel have been layed off..Their is maybe 15 boats stacked at Morgan City.
They wait until your off the boat to tell you that you are going to be
layed off .

Crew boats only or also supply boats?

Just like last time. My dad was laid off along with a few friends when they were off the boat two years ago. I left soon after that, I saw the writing on the wall, if they would just let go of guys who had been with them for over 15 years what were they going to do with a young guy like me?

I beleive their was 5 mini supplys, Seabulk Nabraska OSV due for its 10 year USCG Insp. ,they did not want to spend 300,000.00 right now, plus
8 or 9 crew boats, also getting reports more crewboats coming off charter.

Tied up with a Secor crew boat several weeks ago, and one of our crew members knew the captain. He said his regular boat had been sold, and they had put him on this one. Sounds like he was a valued employee; they didn't let him go.

His comment was that Secor is a holding company, and they had a chance to sell the boat (to make some money) so they did.

From the rumor mill - I heard that Seacor Holdings is possibly purchasing the big Orange boats (Chouest). Anyone heard this rumor?

I have not heard that rumor, but it is one of the most ridiculous things I think I have heard since the one where it was rumored that Tidewater had to help Chouest cover payroll.

Where in the world would Seacor find the money to do any merger or acquisition now? The M&A business is dead. I think that's a crazy rumor.
It wouldn't surprise me to see the Chouest family sell some day. But now? No way.

That Gary Chouest would be in anyway interested in selling his empire before his death is UNTHINKABLE! After he dies however...I have heard different opinions from industry insiders but it mainly is that Mr. Gary does not have a successor who has the force of gravity he exerts over the company to keep it flying into a billion little fragments. Dino just ain't equal in mass to his daddy!

btw Chouest really did have a cashflow crisis in 2000-2001 and did scramble bigtime for help but I do not know if it was from Tidewater? Does anyone notice the few ex Chouest boats owned by Seacor? I heard that Gary had to sell off a few to raise cash when it was down to the azor's edge.
