Any water over my head is dangerous to me!
"the great lakes are the most dangerous body of water in the world."
Anyone else see the commercials for this show?

Prob be like deadliest catch without the crabs.
From what i've heard its just going to be about the tug boat guys on the Lakes not the freighters with first class pilots and some of the best ship handlers moving the coal, iron ore, and other commodities that keep the US steel, Coal fired power plants and construction industries alive. Whatever it is i'm sure it will be better than whale wars.

Just sailed with a deck cadet from glma. He was great. Way ahead of any kp or suny cadet.Originally Posted by GLMASailor

It's a different beast, everything else is just water.

This show is onboard tugs from Calumet River Fleeting, more commonly known around the Lakes as Selvick. While i'm sure the show would be interesting on some level, it is very staged. While i'm sure we all knew 'reality' TV has no basis in reality, this takes it farther than i would have thought.... They ran a barge aground just for the show.

That reminds me of a question I heard about: why do we need to install air conditioned engine room control booths? There is already A/C in the galley!

"WNA may have it's own load line, the Great Lakes do have their own Plimsoll Mark. . . . "
No sarcasm, tell me more.
I wasn't able to find additional information.

The WNA mark is on the "Loadline". A Great Lakes Plimsoll Mark is a diamond instead of a disk. Here is a sample LL Certificate: http://www.uscg.mil/hq/cg5/cg5212/do...GreatLakes.pdf
Not much online about the show, other than the trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXmdiBtsdBQ

Not only is it more dangerous- you might run into Paul Watson's morons
@ cmakin -
I know of your connection to ABS.
So excluding piracy, remoteness, traffic, idiots and other such man-made causes...
what is the most dangerous body of water on earth?
Do Great Lakes vessels pay higher insurance rates than North Atlantic vessels?
I'm sure insurance rates have an awful lot to do with man-made causes.

Bermuda Triangle.
There is no body of water that is inherently dangerous. The correct vessel, and crew go anywhere. But... Who decides what, when, where?, business? Captain?
The GL has its own conundrum. A limited season, and the desire to run as long into (what should be more conservative) the absolute worst conditions possible, with no real way to duck for cover when needed.
When you Google these types of questions, and discard piracy issues, the Indian and Atlantic Oceans seem to be the worst for weather.
The Southern Ocean is mentioned often.
I've never seen the Great Lakes on any of the lists I've looked at.
I'm not trying to start a fight.
We've ALL seen horrible weather in horrible places.
I'd like to know why WNA, is rated in a class by itself.

Hey, they got Candians on the water. That should make them dangerous enough. How much longer before we get Hugh Rowland onboard one of the tugs?
