Default Get an 8 1/2 x 11 license printed, MMD MMC

I just graduated from Calmaritime and got the little red passport Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC). Really underwhelming.

I spoke with a nice lady over at the US Naval Institute about printing off a nice copy of my license. The USNI are the same folks who print the arby darby shellback certificates btw. Janis (jjorgensen@usni.org) was very friendly and printed out the two page license from the pdf I emailed her. She put it on nice card stock paper with bone off color bits that pretty much look like money. It looks fantastic and totally frameable.
Feel free to tell her I told you so.

how to get your PDF USCG license

She said she's happy to print more of them for the cost of shipping only.

    Just a heads up.

They did this for free? Wouldn't it just be easier to buy a nice sheet of paper for your own printer, or go down to FedEx Kinkos?

Yeah you're right! EFFING MAO LITTLE RED BOOK!

At least they should have done it in a nice bound book like the Europeans have which is about the size of the IMCA DP logbook. That effing flimsy piece of crap the USCG gives us now is utterly disrespectful by them of the efforts we undertake to earn our credentials. What on earth was the point of making it that stupid size anyway? What a "這他媽的東東'd" bunch they are...(look it up!)

I'm not a fan of the new mmc either. There is no differentiation between Licensed mariners and unlicensed mariners. At the very least it could say Merchant Officer's Credential.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not stuck on titles, but I worked hard for that damned license.

As the saying goes; its not what's on the outside, but what's on the inside!

Oh, you were talking about the license..... That too.

When I first Graduated from school, I worked hard for the paper license. Now I need a little more sea time to get a Chiefs sticker!

I use a so-called passport wallet to hold boarding pass and passport. They fit in a pocket or hang from the neck for getting though the airport in one piece.

I do also carry what my wife calls my purse.

If I want to hang something to hang on the wall I'll frame my diploma from the Seven Seas University of which the Alaska Maritime Academy is a part. You can get yours here.

There is of course the AVTEC also known as the Alaska Maritime Training Center. I have had the pleasure to work with several graduates of their program who proved to be fine seafarers.

Not poking my stick but I just want to make sure they get their due.

If you're not going to give me a certificate at least give me a proper bound book even if only passport size (but it should be much larger). I still say it is a professional license worthy of a proper certificate. I am glad that is at least possible even if not official. Give me a vintage 1920's steam tanker, liner and tug done in a nice black amongst fine filigree etching anyday. We may not be living in the grand old days of steamships but it at least gives a sense of the heritage of our chosen profession.

Does anyone remember the UL Master they came out with about 25 years ago that had the effing SL-7 on it? Ships that proved to be a massive commercial failure and horrible idea that SeaLand ended up begging the government to rescue them from then have hardly recovered their massive cost in the 25years since they were converted. USNS ANTARES spectacularly broke down in mid-Atlantic in 1990 and had to be towed to Gibraltar for repair and ended up sitting out the whole war there with a melted boiler! I still don't know exactly what caused that to happen? I know a whole slew of RRF ships had major problems getting going and several had some major breakdowns required hundreds of millions of $$$ to fix in a "cost is no object" condition.

When I got my first UL Master I specifically asked them to print in on the old version.

Possibly the change in the MMD, now the MMC, reflects the reduction in the status of the ship's officer in society at large. Those of us who are inside the sub-culture of the mariner may not be aware of this.

I was thinking about this the other day when I was waiting at a truck stop.I was watching truckers with cowboy hats, boots and belts and so forth, trucks with nice paint jobs, chrome etc. They climb into their rigs which they then drive off, handling the rig perfectly.

The drivers are signaling to each other their status but the rest of us non-trucker don't even notice.

Same deal with mariners, very few people care for example that you can command an unlimited tonnage sailing vessel no matter how impressive it seems to a small group.

My advice is to go ahead and get that diploma from Seven Seas University. Frame it, put it on your wall and then explain that in your small world master's ticket is as as good (better) as a masters degree. .

Otherwise forget it, no one cares how many ocean tows you've made, no one give a s**t unless your spilling oil.
