    Question Yet another Tankerman FAQ!

I did a quick search, didn't find the exact answer I need.

I did 90 days on an oil tanker. Have all my loads/discharges and my letter for it.

If I want to get Tankerman PIC-Barge vessels, can I use the loads/discharges from a tank ship and the service on the tank ship to qualify for the PIC on barges?

    THANKS!

Why not take the gargo class thats good for tankships as well as barges, then you will get tankship PIC which is good for barges, as I understand it.

Yes they count. Get your tankerman - pic, not your barge pic...

Just like everyone else is stated get the tankship so you are not just limited to barges!

You can use Tankerman-PIC to work on barges. As others have noted, if you have the time and transfers on tank ships, why not get the (tankship) Tankerman-PIC? This way you have it, but if you take Tankerman-PIC (Barge) now and later decide you'd like tankerman-PIC, you won't have the recency and may not be able to get it.

The difference between the two is the cargo course (4 days for barghe vs. 5 days for PIC) and the fire fighting course. The Basic Fire Fighting that is good for a license and for STCW BST is good for all tankerman endorsements, the tankerman barge course is the same length of time (2 days) but uses less equipment, so it is not acceptable for a license or STCW.

You still need the time and loads/discharges on either the ship for the tankship or barge for the tankbarge. 90 for ship. 60 for barge

Thanks for the replies! All good info. Sounds like I will be able to complete a Tankerman PIC class for ships and use that to get PIC for DL on both tank ships and barges.

Ok here's another one. I have a PIC tankships that's up for renewal this year however I haven't worked any tankers since getting the PIC. According to the CFRs I need documentation of two transfers in the last 5 years or take the renewal class. Now I have the opportunity to do some side work as a barge tankerman, but would two transfers from a barge count for a tankship PIC renewal? Or do I need to perform them on a tanker?

I have read the tankerman requirements section of the CFRs but I'm still not sure.

The transfers have to be on a tankship to renew a Tankerman-PIC endorsement.
