    Default Kirby/Ksea seaboats!

Wondering if this a a further attempt to have a larger non Union contingent to vote out 333?

While probably not the intention in the sale, the decertification guys will take it as lagniappe.

With Seaboats being non-union, and the employees being laid off, how would that work out to anybodies advantage in the vote?

    1. LAGNIAPPE - what a GREAT word! Don't get a chance to THAT in a sentence every day!

Great question in light of the fact that KirbySeaboats didn't keep a one of them around. Secondly $42.3 million seems a pretty steep price to sway a vote - just sayin'

I was wondering if this was done to not just remove another competitor, but to drive the point home to the employees currently wavering on the de certification vote. Also, I would bet the replacement employees will come from the Kirby pool, NOT the 333 pool. What a way to put an exclamation on the decision making process.

Really? RECENCY can be bitch it you don't have any, they just shitcanned all the qualified operators and there are limits to KSEA's pool of people. I admit to not being the brightest light on the tree but I'd want to operate equipment I shed SCADS of money for - RIGHT NOW. Seems to me they got a better deal when they bought ROEHRIG

It will be interesting to see if the USCG has anything to say when it comes to manning these new acquisitions with crews not familiar with the east coast market. They turned a blind eye to "recency" in 1988 and really can't afford to do it again.
I don't think the "de-cert" has anything to do with Kirby, I believe that's an "in-house" attempt to get away from what has recently been referred to as corrupt and self serving actions by former union officers forcing the local into trusteeship.
If Kirby's customers are willing to move their freight with non-union, non local crews you can be sure they're looking at hefty pilotage bills in the near term which they will pass along to the end-user. Almost every customer we deal with has us submit to SIRE/OCIMF inspections on a regular basis, they tend to be a bit squeamish about boats that don't measure up.
The press release describes the acquisition as expanding their fleet with 3 80k barges of the same construction and config as ones they already own. Crewing these units would not be an issue as far as tankermen are concerned..
Nothing will change on the bottom line except there would be no union to interfere with company policy. I really don't think a company as big as Kirby can afford to be careless about their equipment or reputation. They're bound by the tenets of OPA90 and have shareholders too don't they?

It appears that recently isn't called into issue until post accident investigation. If they can get away with it, it seems to still happen. Maybe not as much as in the past, but still out there. Iirc, operation big tow didn't even address decency, just if all were documented.

You're only talking about 12 licenses for 3 boats. I can see the Roehrig thing happening, promise them a job, then can them when you have enough in house employees to cover it.

Just seems amazing, they were bitching about negotiating for a contract, and they plunk down 42 million for three NON pinned units. Crying all the way to the bank!

What is Seaboats going to do with their remaining boats? I believe they had more than 3 right? Being from their hometown, I have heard a lot of news about the sale. People really respect the Churches around here.
