    Unhappy Unemployed

30 Plus of us lost our jobs Yesterday with the sale of Seaboats Equipment to the K-Sea Subsidiary of Kirby.
A Major Surpise to all of us!
We can all "Apply" for our Positions with K-Sea but no Promises.
So any hints of work would be appreciated!

I also thought Seaboats was 333. It sucks that they sold the company with out some kind of employment offer for the crews. I had always heard that this was a great company, I guess I heard wrong. Do you want to stay and work for Kirby?

    Good Luck finding work.

Sorry to hear that, try Crosby out of Golden Meadow (?) LA. They have been buying up other companies tugs like crazy. Also try Global Towing in LaRose/Lockport LA. they just bought a couple of Crowley's big tugs and I know they will need the licenses to crew them.

Was this purchase union busting? I do not know and have no real opinion one way or the other, I have been burned from both sides in the past, now I just want to be a grain of sand on the beach and go unnoticed and collect my paycheck. I can tell you this though, Maryland Marine (Non union)was started in the late 90's and bought all their vessels soley from Higman Towing(TX.) who were SIU. Not sure if Higman still existes or not.

Sorry for this to happen to you guys, especially this time of year, I have been around Kirby to know I would not work for them.

    Tugs,
Unions are worse than the companies when it comes to looking after you, me or Cappy Smo. At least the company tells you up front that their numero uno concern is THEIR profitability and well being. Should you get to tag along and get some of the gravy great, if not, oh well. Unions however spout off how they are "Working" for your betterment SIU is a prime, but not sole example. Look at how they will underbid other unions for contracts. I always heard of "The standard contract" just like i had always heard as a kid the tooth fairy would leave me a quarter under my pillow for a lost tooth. Well I lost alot of teeth and sometimes got a nickel.

It sounds like you had cheap parents but it isn't the union's job to make up for that. The union ain't your Momma and Papa.

A lot of people seem to think a union is a paternal orgnization, it's not. It is a fraternal organization and well all know what fratricide means, right? Friendly fire, Cain and Able, join to find strength through numbers but don't join thinking you won't have to watch your own back.

We were non-union. Decent Place to work, always knew where you stood, nice small family outfit. No major surprises except this one! Tough for a Company like them to compete with The Big NY Boys. Sad day for lots of us.

Crowley is starting to let go of their Invaders? Or did they sell those old Robin Towing tugs.

Two of the nine's went to Asia already. The Sea Voyager just had millions spent on it and it went back to Valdez, the other two big boats might have been sold already. Not much steel left in any of them! The Robin boats are gone - they rode SO much better than the 9's...think Northland/Dunlap bought a few...

I worked for Crowley in Lake Charles when they bought the Robin boats and did much of the grunt work over at Fredeman's SY. I also sailed on one of them on the West Coast during the strike in 87. The Invaders are good boats, but like you reference, the steel may be getting thin in places. At least they don't have a whole lot of ballast spaces to rot away.
