    Default Master offshore crew change

    Hi Everyone!!

Lets say you are the Master onboard an OSV in the GOM and when crew change comes around you and your crew are flying out. But the rig will not have the Helicopter shut down so they can send your relief down let you do your turn over and then pick you up (they can't operate the cranes with a Helicopter running on deck). What they want it's to pick you up before the Helicopter arrives have you do the turn over (if any) in the rig then have you fly out and when the Helicopter is gone send your relief down to the boat.

So the vessel is without a master alongside a platform on DP. This evolution could take anywhere between 45 min to 3 hours.

    Any input?

    Thanks!

    It's the Gulf...everybody is a captain

actually, if the mate (2nd captain) has the license then he assumes command temporarily. If he doesn't have the license or he isn't competent to be in charge then you're in a pickle.

I know that's true for most OSVs under 3000ITC but not for OSVs over 3000ITC or unlimited.

You can leave anytime as long as the COI is covered.
The time for taking all measures for a ship's safety is while still able to do so. Nothing is more dangerous than for a seaman to be grudging in taking precautions lest they turn out to have been unnecessary. Safety at sea for a thousand years has depended on exactly the opposite philosophy.
