    Default Tide Calculation

I am trying to fig out the solution for this problem and can not find it any where, not the answer but the solution to work the problem if anyone can help I would appreciate it.

The charted depth alongside the south face of Mystic Pier, Charlestown, MA, is 35 feet. Your maximum draft is 38 feet. You wish
to have 2 feet under the bottom, on a rising tide, when you go alongside to discharge a heavy lift. What is the earliest time after
0900 EST (ZD +5), on 2 February 1983, that you can dock?

There is a table in the tide table book somewhere that gives "The Height of the Tide at Any Time" There are instructions as well.

Edit: it is Table 3 - an explanation is here.

Solution at Crawford Nautical School. I had difficulties with the view of the web page, hit the print button to view it full screen and be able to see all of the pertinent information.

Sorry I don't have my tide book here to help. But some pointers... 1. Charted depth is 35 your draft is 38 so right off the bat you need 3 feet of rise just to sit on the bottom. Now you want to 2 feet for clearance so you need a total rise of 5'.

    2. Look up charlestown, ma and get the number... go to that number and look for the differences column. high and low tide time diff and high and low water depth diff. write these down as you would normally do to solve a tide problem. go up the the to the name of the reference station and find the page number. go to that page.

    3. On that page number find the month, day, time and write down your times and heights. Verify that your reference station is in the (ZD +5) at the bottom of the page.

    4. You add your time and height diff's just as you would for a basic tide problem.

    5. Now you must find out what time it is from low tide before 0900 EST to the time that the height of tide is 5'.

    6. You should now have duration of the rise of the tide, the range of the tide, the correction is 5'..... use these to enter the table (start at the bottom and work backwards from a basic tide problem) and find the time from nearest low water and add this to the low tide time. This time should be after 0900.
If at first you don't succeed... skydiving might not be for you.
