Default siu & a career as a engineer

Hi, I will be going to the siu Paul hall center soon for their unlicensed apprentice program. I want to become an engineer but I have no experience on a ship . Has anyone gone through there program before? If so what should I study before I go? Also as a engineer how is it ranked, right now my mmd has a rating of wiper, what can I do with that rating, what would come next (qmed?) And what steps are needed to go from a wiper to qmed?
