where there's a will there's a way: if he really wants to learn how to use it he'll figure it out. spell check or no spell check.

If I had a cadet on board speaking and spelling like this I would not only drive him crazy but make him jump over board! Working with the sextant is officer duty and to become an officer this guy obviously still has a long way to go. First he would have to change his attitude before I would show him anything.

If you want to be taken seriously, (especially in the marine field where English is THE official language around the world) if you are wanting info from other professionals at least TRY to write correctly. This would also apply to dealing in person too. And it especially would apply when dealing with a company when you are looking for: a cadet berth, a entry level job, a mates job, or a paycheck.
This whole spell check and auto correct thing is NO excuse for poor grammar and spelling.

Technology has come a long way onboard ships. Almost all information between the vessel and shore side support is pass along via E-Mail. This is usually the only perception they have of your, believe me do miss spell from time to time but the use of numbers and cutting words in half will not be accepted or understand by your employer.

    Good luck!

    You are correct!

But still the point of the post stands. I seen to many bad mariners promoted (or not laid off) because the office believes them to be great assets dew to the fact that their E-mails and reports to the office look very professional (and they do! I am not taking that away from them). But when it comes to the down and dirty hands on they struggle.
Like the engineers that change the oil and check everything from the comfort of their offices. Or the Captains that can't handle a boat!

Just trying to help the Cadet!!!
