    Default Engineer License Upgrade

    Good evening,

I'm posting this in the main forum as the Eng. section seems to be rather dead. My question is about upgrading a second assist unlimited to a first assist (and then chief) unlimited on the new, very large OSV's. I have heard some scuttlebutt that this is possible with enough sea time on the new boats and without any course work. I have also heard that this "loophole" will be closed sometime in the future-requiring you to complete course work a la the deck licenses.

Does anyone have any information on this?

I know of a couple of guys who recently took the 1st AE exam and only worked on OSVs of the USA variety. They can not move to chief unless they get one more year of service with 6 months of working as 1st on a vessel that REQUIRES a 1st while holding a 1st license. Since US OSVs do not require a 1st they'll have to leave the OSVs to get a chief's license. I do not see that changing at any time in the future and I hope it doesn't.

The same applies to ATBs and ITBs. Same rule for ch/mate to master also.
