Default Is your boat on the list?

An interesting compilation of how FEW ships, tugs and JOBS are left in the US Merchant Marine:

    http://www.marad.dot.gov/documents/M...ag.Vessels.pdf

This does NOT include the inland fleet, but is interesting to show how small the fleet really is.

For Newbies looking to get into this industry see how few positions there are, and how difficult the competition is going to be to get a berth.

I get your point (already knew it) but this list has some shortages, no ECO, 1 Tidewater, both are more than "inland". I think there's more missing; I've seen this list before over the years and I've always wondered why they bother to re-date and republish it when it's so inaccurate. Haha...they've got that POS Baffin Strait on there though!!

There are several boats you are missing. The military has several vessels operated by private contractors, some of which offer positions that can take you from deck to wheelhouse and that also includes entry level engine room to chief.

I think (not sure though) this list is the vessels which are in the MARAD financing, us govt backed title XI funding. These are the 'big' players in the worldwide shipping industry. Note that there are many more 'mom and pop' places to get jobs, but they aren't the professional places to work. IMHO!

Also looks like none of the MSC ships are on the list.

MSC is military, not private companies. I DON'T relish the thought of working for the Gummint!

So? It's still a good size chunk of the jobs in the US deep sea fleet. Also, not all MSC ships are MSC - working for a contractor (also not on the list) is a whole different story.

More than just re-dated and re-published.

My new build from last Oct. is listed.
