Default Does one have to take the Celestial Nav. exam again for upgrade mate to master 1600?

I took the mate exam in 2008 with oceans endorsement. Is there an additional celestial exam for master 1600 oceans?

YES, but you can skip it and get a NC master 1600 endorsement.

Although you could skip it, I see no reason why you should. If you took the exam in 2008 you should still have a few celestial morsels left in your brain to re-take the celestial section again after refreshing the material. You're going to need flashing light for the upgrade as well. After that you're pretty well done unless you're moving up to "upper level" licenses. Then you're looking at a pile of STCW courses to get under your belt.

no, you do not have to take the celestial exam to get your license, but as previous posters have said it would be a smart thing to do even if you have no intention of using it. having a license which limits you to certain waters is not in your best interests in this economic climate.

    good luck.

Not true. PMC has a 1600 Ocean Mate, so PMC has already taken that pile of courses and already has an OICNW endorsement, which means no more courses until Chief Mate / Master.

Did he take the master or mates version of the celestial course?

I got a buddy that was burned that way, He has a NC 1600 ton Master and an Oceans 1600 Mate because he took the mate version back in the day not knowing there was a difference.

DAMN! I took my celestial nav course in April 2007 and tested in June 2008. My cheap course binder of one page explanations followed my multiple choice problems probably fell apart a couple years ago - I don't have it anymore. I will have to start digging to remember what the types of questions were on the exam.

So, if understand this now, I do not need celestial to upgrade to 3rd mate unlimited. And if I was 3rd mate unlimited I would not need another celestial exam to get 1600 master. Go figure.

The only thing I remember about my celestial test was that there seemed to be a few questions that were not part of my course material. I would not be surprised if I took a different exam in 2008.

It might be okay to ask this here?
To go from the 100 ton Inland to Oceans what is needed?
I was thinking that its the Celestial?
    Hmmm?

1600 master is not OICNW. He will have to retake Celestial to get in on the Master license. If he does not, he would have a 1600 mate oceans, and a 1600 master near coastal, but subsequent upgrades as mate as you pointed out - 3rd and 2nd will not required further testing.

Balls. Most blue water veined sailors on here are too obsessed with how big their ships are and wouldn't think of going out that far on something just 100 tons.

Just joking. There should be a list of approved courses on NMC's website, and then you can contact the schools listed - for celestial.
