    Default Non Union Jobs

New 3/m here looking for non union companies to consider. From what I've been able to find so far it looks as if most non union companies are operating in the GOM (which I'm not apposed to), but would like to know of some that are west coast or east coast local. Also trying to find how pay, benefits, work conditions, etc, compare to typical MMP and AMO jobs.

    Thanks!

I just scored a foreign-flag job in Africa here: http://www.crewing.biz.ua/module-Offshore-page-1.html you will need to check the various companies, a couple links were bad, but just google to get correct link. Definitely worth the effort. Many foreigners working in GOM now, big discussion on this board a few months ago. Sadly, the discussion has died, and the situation is just as bad now (if not worse) you can read all about it here: fighting back against foreign mariners in GoM I finally came to the sad realization "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" and decided to go foreign-flag...leaving next week for a FPSO in Africa...in my humble opinion, somebody sold us out in the GOM, so keep an open mind to foreign-flag if union not a good option for you. Good luck.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind, but I'd still like to hear of some companies on our coasts. Even if I can't get a job with these companies now, I'd like to get a feel for how some mates like or dislike working for some U.S. non-union companies.

I was actually wondering the same thing and the fact that you haven't received any replies makes me wonder if those types of jobs even exist. How realistic is it for someone to get a ship board job (as a 3m) and not be union?

My company is Non union (john w. stone and oil) . We manily have tug and barges and work the mississipi river but we have one Mini 300ft tanker that I am on now. We just hired an AB tankerman and promoted a guy to 3rd mate. Pay is very decent and so are the benefits.

From what I have heard Seabulk tankers has a 300 and some odd foot ship in the fleet that is non union also which I am dying to find out about.

Hornbeck offshore has a couple ships ( Centerline and Strongline). I am 99% positive they are non union.

With all the shit hitting the fan.....Good luck. A crap load of people are getting laid off down in the gulf.

The Seabulk ship you are referring to is a small container ship called Strong Patriot. One of the worst riding POS's I've ever worked on. Good crew and company though. TransAtlantic Lines is also nonunion. One small tanker, two small container ships (one is limited tonnage). The tanker is pretty new and in good shape. The container ships are pretty crappy, but again great crews. Company is sos=so. Pay is so-so. Health insurance is way too expensive IMHO. Vessels are crewed by Tony at Vessel management Services 5049459181.
There are also companies that are union but do there own hiring. They hire you and you join the union afterward. Grand River Navigation is one such on the Great Lakes. Rick at 440 930 2024. Best of luck in your search.

I've worked the supply boats and was no where close to impressed with my options. a.k.a Gulfmark But I have yet to have a single complaint with Transocean even with today's mess. They are a great company to work for. Foreign Flag is a good deal right now, I wouldn't over look options just because you have a predetermined idea of what you think you want. Times are tough. Good luck.

I've worked both sides, union and non union, at the present, I'm working as a non union chief engineer on a large AHTS, The way the union treated me as opposed to the company I presently work for is non comparable, I'm staying put, money is great, benifets are OK, time off is OK, get travel pay and blue cross and blue shield insurance. Been here for the past 18 years and will retire here. Starting out as a 3/m or a 3/asst. that is exactly what you will be on either side. Got to put time in to make the money.
