Does a TWIC serve the same function as a Z Card or do I have to do both? I have the TWIC but not the AB, although I meet the requirements for an unlimited AB.

Also, do I have to get an AB ticket to sit for a 500 ton master's license? I meet the requirements for the document (Master 500 Ton Near Coastal) but I don't know if a previous (expired) 800 Ton license makes me eligible to sit for a 500 Ton test or if I must demonstrate recency of experience and have an AB and...I'm confused.

I currently hold a 100 Ton Master/Near Coastal/STCW-95 Near Coastal and want to upgrade to 500 Ton. I have 2200 days on boats of more than 500 tons, but most of it was 20 years or more ago.

Any help is much appreciated.

Buck

You need TWIC and an MMD. Here's the checklist from the USCG and excerpt from same, this should help:
<A href="http://www.uscg.mil/stcw/st-info-packs/Deck%20or%20Engineer_License_Package.pdf]http://www.uscg.mil/stcw/st-info-packs/Deck%20or%20Engineer_License_Package.pdf
