Mariners carrying Knives

The company I work for prohibits knives in the gulf of mexico....here in Brazil where I'm currently working the deckhands are allowed to carry 6-8 inch fixed blades in a sheath. Go figure. Me? I think a mariner with out a knife is like a carpenter with out a hammer....I guess that's the cleaned up version of one of the earlier posts.

At this time, I would like to inform everyone about DMT’s Knife Injury Prevention Policy. Effective immediately, DMT has
decided to ban the use of knives as hand tools offshore. Alternative cutting devices shall be utilized instead of any knife. This
new policy is company wide, (i.e. marine, deepwater, diving, and any subcontractor working for DMT). The only exceptions to
this policy are the diving personnel in the water, as well as galley hands preparing food who may use a kitchen knife only while
wearing approved hand protection. Any personnel who has not been issued an alternative cutting device is urged to come by
the office and see Bill Carpenter or myself to have one supplied to them. This policy is an important step as DMT moves forward

to meeting HSE standards in this ever growing industry and in ensuring all personnel return home safely from offshore.

Me, I like to just GIVE AWAY knives to me crew. I like a sailor with a knife. I find any sailor without a knife is an ordinary. A sailor with a dull knife is a cook. And a sailor with a sharp knife (and who knows how to use it and keep it sharp) is almost a Mate.

18 U.S.C.A. 2277 provides, in part:

'(a) Whoever brings, carries, or possesses any dangerous weapon, instrument, or device, or any dynamite, nitroglycerin, or other explosive article or compound on board of any vessel registered, enrolled, or licensed under the laws of the United States, without previously obtaining the permission of the owner or the master of such vessel shall be fined not more than $1,000 or imprisoned not more than one year, or both.'

46 USC 11506 - Sec. 11506. Carrying sheath knives

A seaman in the merchant marine may not wear a sheath knife on board a vessel without the consent of the master.
The master of a vessel of the United States shall inform each seaman of this prohibition before engagement. A master failing to advise a seaman is liable to the United States Government for a civil penalty of $50.

Pretty sure they are going with dangerous weapon. Then again if the Master is okay with it, then your good to go.

I'll never leave home without this I can't believe how many abs I have seen without knives. It really drives me nuts when I see an A/B cutting line with a steak knife. I learned really quick how important a good knife is especially before dp when we had to tie up to a rig and had to cut the rig lines nothing cuts a 4"diameter hawser better than a spyderco salt best investment any sailor could make that and a surefire led flashlight and headlight combo if your working on a barge or in a tank you have to have your hands free to turn jacks and turnbuckles so this is just important as a good knife http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=173

IMHO..some kitchen knives make a good tool for rope work..have a cheap 8" SS serrated on one side chef knife that I bought in Luanda, Angola 5+ years ago..it is in the bottom of my bag right now and still going strong!!

I also used a victorinox filet knife and a great white both are very cheap and have helped me out of quite a few jams and still was able to filet the occasional dauphin cod and halibut that um washed up on the back deck.

My company has a strict policy about carrying knives. Of course the punishment depends on who you are. It ranges from losing your 6 month safety bonus to termination of employment. I have read the comments and I agree: Put one of those office idiots on the back deck with a rope or tagline wrapped around his arm and see how long it takes him to get out of it before the crane operator jerks his ass off the deck...To manage a boat company, to dictate rules for boats, I think you should have come up from boats. Worked out there on the water.

G.Gilmore I read somewhere that no one on the deepwater horizon had a knife to cut the line from the lifeboat and the crew members from the supply boat had to cut them loose. I can't believe that a company would forbid and punish any seaman for being repaired for work you wouldn't fire a engineer for using a wrench or a captain for using a chart plotter why would you fire or punished for carrying a knife your right about office dictating what goes on a ship, boat, or rig personally I'll put my safety first and take the write up.
