Question for Mr. Cavo or anyone else that may have the answer regarding STCW

Short recap... worked on crewboats under 100 tons. Just recently upgraded to Master 500 NC. I had to show first aid/med care provider/adv fire fighting to qualify for this license, so it has been turned in to the coast guard, however, i did not apply for stcw certification at the time, as my 100 ton master license READ: THE HOLDER OF THIS CREDENTIAL MEETS STCW 1995 REGULATIONS WITHOUT FURTHER ENDORSEMENT. Now I know that I need to apply for a STCW certification for vessels 500 GRT, but all my certificates have expired as they were only valid for a year. Do I need to take BST/ADV Fire fighting/Med care provider/bridge resource mgtmt all over again ? Thank You for any help posted !!!!

Casper - I would say yes you will need to take those classes over. Maybe, if it is close 1 year 2 month, you might be able to talk with the NMC about it. But, chances are they will say the same thing. But, I have been known to be wrong at times.

First off, congratulations on your 500 ton Master. But, I think I need a little more clarification before I can answer your question.
It sounds like you have an active application at NMC. Is that true?

I'm a bit confused by your certificate question. You say that all your "certificates have expired as they were only valid for a year. Do I need to take BST/ADV Fire fighting/Med care provider/bridge resource mgtmt all over again?"
But, I'm pretty sure your BST certificate is good for 5 years, even if it isn't currently associated with an existing STCW certificate. There seems to be some debate about how long your ADV FF cert is good for, but at a minimum, I would say that it is good for 5 years as well. To the best of my knowledge, MED-PRO and BRM do not expire.

I'm thinking the easiest way to deal with this is to get in touch with your evaluator at NMC and tell them that you want to amend your application to include STCW certification.

If you don't know who your evaluator is yet, email the iasknmc email address with your mariner number and reference number and ask them to forward it to your evaluator.

If you don't have an active application with NMC, do you have the new MMC or an old style license? If the old style, do you not have an associated STCW-95 cert (the kind with your photo on the bottom)?

Capt Fran - I read into the question that the certs were issued by a school, given the fact that he recently upgraded to 500 t master. Did I miss something there Casper?

Casper - If the school certs were turned into the NMC/REC upon course completion they should have them in your file. And that would be a Mr. Cavo comment.

Thank You and Capt. Brian for the replies !!! Let me clarify things... I have 100 Master(Old Style) and now 500 Master in MMC form(New Style). Along with AM Unlimited which the NMC did not add to my new MMC booklet, go figure.... wasn't this booklet supposed to contain all endorsements and ratings in it ? Anyhow... After I received my new 500Master license, I learned I needed to apply for STCW aswell, so YES... I have an active application with the NMC right now for the STCW, and also submitted my VSO cert to get that added to it. The lady that took in all my certificates at the REC New Orleans told me I had ONE year from the ISSUE DATE to turn in my certificates, however the certificates themselves have not expired. here's what I have first aid & cpr exp date may 2010, Med Care Provider exp May 2013. My combined basic& advanced firefighting doesn't have exp date, but was issued jan 2008 and BRM issue date oct 2007. My application for the STCW is currently pending assignment to an evaluator, so we'll see. What's throwing me off is the fact that the lady at the REC said i had to turn my certs within a year of issue. She took everything in and said that I would get a letter from NMC stating that I need to take this classes over again. I sure hope she's wrong, and thanks again for the replies guys !!
