Statement regarding the passing of SUNY Maritime student William McCarthy

SUNY Maritime College sadly announces the passing of one of our students, William McCarthy, 21, a first class cadet from New Hyde Park, N.Y.

Mr. McCarthy was on the training ship Empire State as part of Maritime College’s Summer Sea Term when he fell ill on Tuesday evening. Emergency measures were implemented by the ship’s doctor and nurse. Mr. McCarthy passed away at approximately 4:35 am this morning.

No further information is available at this time.

Speaking for the College community, Vice Admiral John Craine, president of Maritime College expresses his deepest sympathy and condolences to Bill’s family and friends for their tragic loss.
