President Obama, has Just issued a 6 month ban on Offshore Drilling. The rigs my company services are going on lock-down and are minimizing staff to a skeleton crew. Which means my company is immediately downsizing and preparing to start laying off staff. Well, thank you Bp, looks like im out of a job again.SOB!!!

Anyone know any companies looking for an offshore cook or a Cheif Steward?

That happened several weeks ago. I can agree with the concern, but have no idea what the hell 6 months means. A time line? What the hell is wrong with these people?? Why not 30 days, or 365 days?? Why an arbitrary number? Does Obama have a crystal ball that tells him that in exactly 6 months there's going to be some great epiphany on deep water drilling?

Can someone tell me why your boats aren't being used to help recover oil??

It seems to me that no one should be out of a job considering the sheer amount of work needed to stop the flow and recover existing oil. Am I wrong (honestly)?

I have to agree with you John - I've gotten at least 4 emails from companies looking for people to crew boats up for the spill. One of them was even promising a hotel room every night plus $$ for per diem! And I have friends that claim they can't find any work right now...bullshit!

As Far as I know we have 1 vessel working as cleanup, and I suppose its probably not as difficult for the Deck and Engineering departments to find work but as an offshore cook its a nightmare. I Will rent a Place in New Orleans for a Month and see if I cant find another ship dont know how much luck I will have. Good luck to everyone else having problems. Ces't La vie

The list we got on our boat said 33. The rig we are contracted to was one of them.... Nabors 202 drilling for ATP Titan MC 941

a better question..why aren't resources like maritime employment, rig zone, faststream, etc. just "bristling" with vacancies..why can't company's like NRC and MSRC be bothered with a call back after you email them with an inquiry and resume..could it be that those who percieve themselves in charge of the upcoming "big top extravaganza" are a long way from having their "shit together"??

much of what is being accomplished is by the locally effected at the local level who grabbed the "bull by the balls" while big government and the media takes a "stroll on the beach"..now that is admirable..to those people I say..GET ER DONE!!

BTW..as someone who experienced the Exxon Valdez "cluster fuck"..working a "spill" should be a long long distance 2nd from a mariner's first choice of employment!!

What do you expect oil and gas prices are low. 90% of the country supports the ban, but wait till these rigs leave and oil prices creep back up....everyone will be screaming for drilliing and it will be too late to get the rigs back in the Gulf. Word on the street is Transocean is taking their ball and leaving the playground. I don't really blame them.

I just heard on the news that laid off rig workers during the 6 month moritorium will be compensated out of the BP $20 fund. I would think that would apply to associated workers as well, i.e. boat folks.

Chris Mathews suggested we drill like in Norway by drilling a relief well for every well drilled in the gulf. That is a great idea, we should all get onboard, and pay the same that Norwegians pay for each liter of gas to support the idea.

Status update. I have been on the phone all day. Chouest and a large amount of other companies that service the rigs have initiated a company wide hiring freeze Until the ban is lifted. Well gents, I got 400$ left to my name so I am buying a discount Plane ticket back to Maui and just going to tough it out on the beach till things blow over, better then having to sleep in a shelter in New Orleans in my opinion.

WASHINGTON—BP PLC, under intense legal and political pressure from President Barack Obama, agreed Wednesday to put $20 billion into a fund to compensate victims of the Gulf oil spill, and said it would cancel shareholder dividends for the first three quarters of this year to offset that cost.

BP said it would pay another $100 million to a separate fund to help oil-industry workers sidelined by the Obama administration's moratorium on deepwater drilling.

any truth to the one about ECO stacking vessels? Ive heard like 19! I take that with a grain of salt but with their entire fleet pretty much being deepwater its plausable.

expect the majority of the vessels are more likely to follow the deep water rig fleet overseas..where the vessels should hopefully be able to maintain their "core" crew members but may be required to hire "expates" for the remainder??not to worry there is years of employment ahead for those that want it cleaning up the DWH mess..particullarly if the geological structure collapses and the well really blows out..wouldn't want to on a vessel sitting near the well when that gas bubble makes it to the surface!!

all over the bayou. Heard it from various captains with a variety of companies. On my 2 weeks off now and Ive gotten at least 4 or five different texts. I usually pay little mind to the dock gossip but its been coming from a vaiety of folks and a deepwater closure for an extended peiod could sure hurt the companies heavily involved in deepwater support like ECO, Hornbeck, ect.

I hope for all our sakes that its simply rumor b/c where ECO leads the rest of us seem to follow.

Not trying to rock the boat but I knew there were guys with the company here that are straight shooters.
