I'm pretty sure the first law suit was filed by a relative of one of the missing already. That means they would have had to contact the lawyer prior to know if they were accounted for or not. Sounds like pure greed to me.

that's my point. . . at some point all they needed was someone at the home office calling the next of kin for those who were confirmed safe on the boat that they were safe. No big details, just they are safe and headed to land. . . more details to come. It is not like all of the wives were in the same house together. . .

Did you catch the other DWH thread where Jones Act is already incinuating a coverup by Transocean............ I'm biting my tongue on the subject, but I'm disappointed by these developments (The ambulance chasing and the lawsuits before ANYTHING is known about the incident) so early in the game.

Actually some ARE set up so they can. The Developmental Driller rigs are set up with anchor winches, usually just a couple are used to set subsea architecture, but they are there. . . . or at least they were when I felw off the rig yesterday morning.

Thank you Fixin for posting. I had already received a partial list. A few of the guys I didn't know but I worked with 5 of them through my time on the Enterprise and the Horizon. My heart is broken for their families. The ones I knew were great guys, hard workers.

    MODUke,
I agree, the term exploration is often misused/understood. There are several aspects to "exploration" of a field which often continue for years while the oil company decides if a find will be profitable enough to produce. BP does both exploration (using drilling contractors like TOI) & production. From what I was told by a geologist who has been working the project there in the very recent past, the DWH was involved in doing exploration work to determine the extent of the reserves in the Tiber prospect. They know the oil is there but efficiently producing from a field requires a heck of a lot more than drilling one or two wells. Usually numerous wells are drilled at various locations/ depths & different Gamma angles all of which are used to confirm what the geologists think the seismic data is saying . . . This is especially true when it is a very large find with extensive variations in geological morpholgy the Tiber prospect or the Mad Dog field.

I think the best thing that can happen at this point, moving forward, is that Transocean coordinates with the authorities to expedite issue of any lost credentials, family counseling, and general well being of their employees. There is a lot to do to bring back some sort of normalcy. Most will have to be placed somewhere in the coming months - within the fleet - in time. Not much will ever go right during an emergency such as this - specifically information and communications, but we will see how this is handled. I'm sure that Transocean will do good by their employees.

"NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard says a crew member from an oil platform that sank off Louisiana reported an initial explosion three hours before the rig went up in flames in a second, larger explosion.
Coast Guard Senior Chief Petty Officer Mike O'Berry says the first blast was reported at 7 p.m. CDT Tuesday.
Later, the rig sent an emergency signal. O'Berry says a nearby rig at the same time reported the Deepwater Horizon was in flames.
He says the rig didn't ask for help during the initial call. The Coast Guard sent help after the emergency signal came.
The Coast Guard is investigating what happened during that three hours. "

Hmmmm, that's VERY interesting. First mention I have heard of that. All the previous stuff was talking about how things happened with no warning & all. This info makes much more sense, but it makes me wonder why the rig seperintendent would have been sitting in the galley as someone mentioned in one of the posts on this thread if the rig had been fighting a well control issue for three hours. Usually you have to throw folks out of the driller's shack when you have taken a kick because EVERYONE shows up to try & help.

Thanks for posting that info C Captain, really helps things start to make a bit of sense.

Considering the fact that John was not onboard the "Deep Seas"<ST1</ST1 at the time of the Engine Room fire which was not hush hush... There was another issue that was blown out of proportion and I believe if the parties involved were not at odds with each other then there would have been a different outcome. Sorry to burst your bubble but that is the truth... I hope your doing well John keep smiling!!!

Neither to the first 2. And no to the latter also, which evidently you aren't either, from the looks of some of your claims & statements. I was just surfing & looking for info about the disaster. I just happened to notice the great contradiction in your post, while at the same time appearin to act like you were an expert on these matters. I just thought it hilarious that a "Chief Mate on a brand new drillship" would make such statements that even a person who has never even worked close to the industry (well, unless a couple years on a land gas-rig would be considered close) could see the absurdity in.

There's ALWAYS instant experts on any type event on the internet. And when they can't explain what they just claimed to know about, they resort to childs-play & attempting to ridicule anyone who pointed out their mistakes.

To the ones who posted pictures & good accurate information on this .... thanks. That's what I was hoping to find. I leave with a bit more knowledge about what happened now.

Don't get in too many "firefights" Admiral Chief Mate. You did say you liked those & machine guns probably aren't a real good idea on a brand new drillship. Hopefully your ship never catches on fire, but if it does, be sure to tell the USCG not to try to put any water on it ..... might sink.

P.S. I'll help you out with the new name. I'm "Mr. 3 posts" now.

I don't work offshore but I do know too much about big incidents. Can we please keep the ROFLCOPTER's off this thread? It's just too close to home for some of our gCaptain friends.

Can we also ban annoynmous posters from this thred? Who the hell is Halligan_t and who's he to say which fires John was or wasn't in?

Why? Does the rig floor have microphone input into the VDR? Is the subsea instrument panel connected?

I don't know the answer to these questions but I always assumed it was just the bridge (and/or ECR) equipment that was recorded.

I would appreciate if this thread stays on point. Meaning anything regarding the Deepwater Horizon or something that can benefit the conversation. This thread has a lot of traffic and it's good exposure for gcaptain, but make it exposure that can benefit the situation.....if that is possible.

Question, if the explosion took out the drillers house and the BOP panel on the rig floor was compromised/shorted, etc - would it have rendered the other one or two panels useless? Have no idea, just wondering.

Just in case some have missed the update on page 7. . . here is the missing list I have been attempting to maintain! But before I repost the list. . .it's a shame that there are few on this thread bickering like children instead of simply enhancing the conversation. I am not in the oilfield. . . but I have MANY loved ones along side of you guys in Drilling and in Production. My neighbor was on the Horizon Tuesday night and I couldn't hold back the tears when I hugged him yesterday afternoon when he finally made it home to his beautiful 3 daughters, wife, and other family and friends. The jokes mocking any emergency or catastrophe aboard a ship/rig/platform is not funny or necessary (ex: ROFLCOPTER Girl). There are lives at stake each and every day you guys hop on the bird and go to work. We women left behind to tend to the house, children, bills, and everything else is a lot of responsibility, but ultimately. . . each and every day we pray for your safety and a safe trip back home to us. Please remember before you post snide comments or jokes, there are 126 men that were aboard the DWH. . . with them comes a many family memebers and friends that love and care for them and I would hate for them to read through all of this and see someone being petty and childish and the expense of a tragedy such as this. Life is too short to be cruel, hateful, or snide. Be true to yourself, worry about yourself, and be kind. . . none of us are guaranteed tomorrow. . .and I sure as heck do not want to know that my last day on Earth would be remembered as such crudeness and immaturity. God Bless You all for what you do. . . Prayers continue to flow for all of those affected by DWH's tragic ending.

my condolences again to all who have been hurt in this tragedy.

my background is maritime and lots of O&G not O&G rig fire fighting so please explain:
as soon as I saw the rig heeling over yesterday I was curious why the OSVs were continuing to pump water onboard as it was obvious that rig's GM was changing. is this standard operating procedure? to wit: is it better to let a fire burn uncotrolled on an abandoned rig or is it better to douse with water and sink it the rig?
to me, it seems like the cleanup problem has just gotten 20 times more difficult: instead of a floating wreck burning oil we have a sunk wreck leaking oil.
    please explain!!
    thanks & god bless all.
