    Default prospector

    unrepking,

can you tell me how long one needs to sail msc to become eligible for retirement benefits?

can one expect to work enough overtime that would equal base rate pay/mo.?

does msc have any ships that require a "secret" security clearance for civmars?

    thanks, appreciate your posts.

All excellent questions my friend....as soon as you start working at MSC you will be paying into your FERS retirement account and you can also start to contribute to your TSP. After a certain amount of time the federal government will start to contribute thier part to you TSP. At MSC you can expect to double your base pay with you overtime. So if base pay is $40000/year, if you work for 9 to 11 months then you will make $70000-$80000 (this is a rough formula but for most ratings this is the case). I think everyone at MSC must obtain a SECRET clearance. Certian positions (Captain, RETs, CHENG, Chief Mate) require a TOPSECRET clearance. Folks on the USNS Zeus may also need a higher clearance. So if you are thinking about joining MSC you are making a great career move and good luck!

    UnRepKing,

many thanks. this is the info i was looking for.

i have a great job now, highest pay in the SIU, with a 60 day rotation. I know most sailors would never think about leaving something like this, and i do feel very fortunate to have hard work rewarded,

but without a good retirement plan and benefits, this has limited to no rewards long term.

which brings me to ask, as a retired civmar, what will be available as far as health insurance needs?
