500 mate 1600 mate and 3rd mate are all the same test,, class requirements and assessments just different sea time requirements
in order to get a 1600 ton mate NC you would need

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
COASTAL
TERRESTRIAL
COMPASS
METEROLOGY
CARGO
STABILITY
SHIPHANDLING
WATCHKEEPING
CELESTIAL
FLASHING LIGHTS
at about 18,000.00 dollars and about a total of 6 months in school
PLUS all the assessments for the OICNW

If you are testing for a mate OSV 500 TON you might want to test for your 1600 mate INLAND license as they are about hte same test. THEN when you get all your classes done for the OICNW and assessments done you can upgrade to 1600 NC or 3rd mate without testing again
