They sent a letter? That's more than just about every company I've ever dealt with.

They get hundreds of emails everyday and can't get back to everyone. If you stop in and talk to them they are extremely nice and wiling to spend a decent amount of time talking to you. A friend of mine and I went down there last March and met with Nicky Collins on our spring break from the Academy. Nicky cleared out his whole afternoon and spent almost three hours talking to us and giving us a tour of the training center, the warehouse, the accounting offices with all the cute girls. We even met the VP of ECO. I'd say if your serious about wanting to work for them drive down to galliano and camp out for a few weeks and just make your name and face known. As soon as my license is in hand in January 2014 I'll be driving straight to Galliano the next day with my bags packed.

Good luck with your job hunt.

I have a friend who says he has been applying for 2 years online but has never gotten a job. I applied a little while ago online because I am still on the job now with no response from them. But makes sense tho if they are getting hundreds of emails a day. So as soon as I get the final heave ho after dry dock (which will be with in the next two weeks) I am just going to rent a car, say a prayer and drive over and apply in person. It seems to be the only way right now. The free school would be a great benefit also. A guy who is willing to put in the extra work could sure put something together. I heard you have to sign a contract with them for a couple years if you take a class but hay if its as good as a company as everyone says then I see no big deal with that either.

I worked there for ten years. I started there with a 100 ton license and left there with my 1600 ton Master, OSV Master, Towing Master, 2nd Mate Unlimited and my DP certificate. All of which were achieved because of their structure, training and equipment. I made life long friends and thoroughly enjoyed working there. I have been gone now for almost four years and still a part of me misses the atmosphere. The job of coming in and out of port, anchor jobs and rig moves were all a lot of fun. Even though they can't cater to each individual that applies, they are indeed a class act. I often entertain the idea of going back, but the schedule, pay and benefits available there are just not comparable to the rigs.

You do not sign any contract nor incur any obligation when you are hired or take any classes at their training center. The classes at their training center are free. They do have a career advancement program, or CAP. It is considered on a case by case basis. ECO will advance you the money for classes that they do not offer at their training center. They then deduct that amount from your paycheck spread out over a 2 year period. At the end of 2 years and if you are still employed by them, they give all of that money back to you. It is not as common as it used to be because now their training center offers every class you need to get your 2nd mate unlimited and 1600 Master. Not sure about the engineering side of things.

Hang in there Crawdaddy. I can tell from your posts that you are positive and optimistic even when facing adversity. With the right attitude nothing is outside of your reach. Especially in this industry that rewards hard work. If you can get in with an outfit like Chouest the sky is the limit. Hard work does pay off. Good Luck.

For you guys that seem to be a little miffed because you have been applying online with no results, or sending emails with no replies, take heed of the comments made here alluding to the fact that the people that do the hiring at these companies are getting HUNDREDS of emails, phone calls, etc. daily. DAILY. Think about the last time you opened your email inbox, and what kind of work it takes to get through that volume of correspondence.

And it doesn't matter how great you think you are, just remember that you are one of HUNDREDS.
I went down there in the winter of 2010-2011 several times to knock on doors. Couldn't have picked a worse time. But, every company I walked into was kind and cordial. Every one of them took the time to at least say hello to me face to face, even if there wasnt a chance in hell of any hiring.

This impressed me. Sitting down face to face with Nicky and Miss Laverne impressed me. When the time comes I will be headed that way again, to show up in person, with bags packed and my personal affairs in order so that I can go anywhere and do anything for as long as they need me to.
Let them who know not how to pray, go to sea.

Things are even better over there than I thought. It makes me even more excited to drive over. I sure hope it works out. I will keep you guys posted as to how it goes. I to wish crawdaddy good luck and hang in there. I really appreciate the comments and advice. I have read several posts now where a guy who was willing to put in the work has really built a resume they can be proud of by working for them and going to the school. I hope I can be one of those success stories too, but if the worse case happens and they aren't interested then I will just keep taking classes myself and make it happen. Well smooth sailing guys thank you again

Is ECO still not even time?? That's a deal breaker for some. I can't see working 2/3 of my life. If you can't survive on working a 180 days, you are living outside your means.
