I read an article about Cenac gearing up for South American trade. It might be worth a shot for those looking for a job in towing:

NOAA, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, under the U.S. Department of Commerce, is home to one of the Nation's seventh uniformed service-The NOAA Commissioned Corps. The officers of the NOAA corps command NOAA's research and survey vessels and operate aircraft. In a typical career, a NOAA Corps officer is involved in duties such as serving aboard a hydrographic, fisheries, or oceanographic research ship; scuba diving; conducting fish and marine mammal surveys; environmental satellite operations, and engineering field work; research at one of NOAA’s numerous lab facilities across the country; or flying into the eye of a hurricane.
    Requirements:
The NOAA Corps offers commissions to selected applicants who are U.S. citizens, hold a baccalaureate or higher degree in science, math or engineering, meet the entry requirements, and pass the required physical examination. Candidates are commissioned as ensigns and, after successful completion of a Basic Officer Training Class, report to a NOAA ship for their first assignment.
Basic Officer Training Classes (BOTC) are held in February and August. Selections for these classes are made 3 months prior to the beginning of the class, so inquiries should be made in a timely fashion. The NOAA Corps' physical standards include excellent health, normal color vision, and uncorrected visual acuity no worse than 20/400 in each eye, correctable to 20/20. Candidates must PASS a complete military physical.
The NOAA Corps Recruiting Unit is located in Silver Spring, Maryland.

    Contact Information

All correspondence should be sent to the following address:
    NOAA Corps Recruiting Unit

    Silver Spring, MD 20910
To contact the NOAA Corps Recruiting Unit; call toll free (800) 299-6622 or send e-mail to NOAACorps.Recruiting@noaa.gov. Our fax number is (301) 713-4140.
Please visit our web sites www.noaacorps.noaa.gov for detailed instructions on the application process.
Thanks, I went to their presentation many months back.
It looks like they're going to not make mates have to take the BOTC, which is in someways the same as 4 years of maritime school packed into a few months with only license courses. However, there was no date on when this would be.
I don't mind taking the classes, its just if you have to leave within a year (not sure if its a year or more) then you have to PAY for the training, the same training I'm already paying for with student loans.

I dont know if its just me, but I've found my firefox browser stumbles with half of the job websites out there. I got stuck at usajobs and mcdermott for example. I have cookies enabled and everything. Internet explorer is fine even though I hate its interface. Anyone have the same problem?

I hate IE too, and I use a Firefox add-on called "IE Tab" to deal with those pesky websites that don't like Firefox. It allows you to open tabs in Firefox using IE, without having to actually open IE on it's own. I like it.

That's funny...I thought the same thing when I saw that posting earlier. But, I guess there are those folks that are happy with what they are doing and don't have aspirations.

At least now I know why I keep getting the "We'll keep you in mind" responses from McDermott.

Ordinaryseaman, your search skills are decidedly impressive. And ya I'm waiting for a response from those McDermott guys too. I really don't dig these online applications that take an inordinate amount. And then you get a random phone call 2 weeks later(and usually at an awkward time) and the guy on the phone ends up up asking you the same questions as the online form. Ok I'm done. Keep up the good work OS

OrdinarySeaman certainly has the bead on where to look for jobs...

I would be wary of the posting for Resolve Marine for the 1600 Master. If you're looking for something short term, and have the experience, give it a try, but it seems to be a constant revolving door there, and the money they're offering isn't up to par with the rest of the GOM.

    But...if you need a job...

    Exsubguy- thanks.

I hear you on the long applications- I've done around 10 a day since October

I've only received one call- from Cruisewest. They sounded very interested and told me they'd be calling back on a certain date. No call... Tried emailing...nothing

That's the downside- the upside is- I've learned a lot about maritime recruiting, salaries, companies, etc! And hopefully helped a few people along the way.

I get a lot of emails and PM's through the site- and it seems like some companies are starting to lay off

If you are reading this and thinking of quitting your job- make sure you have something lined up before jumping ship!
