I applied for this months back (AB). Did the whole registration with usajobs, and no response, and sent emails. I was told on the phone that I would have a response upon registering to the site. Not sure what happened, I think maybe NOAA perhaps was waiting for me to join the officer corps, which I'm not interested in. They train you for your license in a fast series of courses and you are liable for the cost of that if you leave in a certain amount of time. Great if you havent already spent a huge wad of cash on a maritime college education!

Either way, you can't go into NOAA as a civilian mate, so I was told by the recruiter, you go in as AB and start your way up. If you're a 3/m that is.

I'm sure the job is great and fantastic, but that usajobs.com site gives me a huge headache, I much prefer a phone call or going into a NOAA recruiting center, that latter being nonexistent as far as I know.

Maybe someone knows how to get that site to work for them.

I know what you mean, everyone talks about a mariner shortage but I've applied to just about every job there is since November and I have never even got a email or phone call back yet. Sitting at the MMP hall is about the most depressing thing in the world unless you're an A book with a old card.

Argo- try these- they wrote me back- marie.dahlheim@noaa.gov (HR coordinator) and Thomas Martin. Mr. Martin can be reached at 757-441-3870, or by email at Thomas.D.Martin@noaa.gov.

Als0- you can log into usajobs, then go to "myusajobs" click on "my applications" to see updates on your application

Abergeron- I hear you! I've applied at several companies 3-4 times. I have excellent references and am pretty qualified for an OS spot. My only guess is that the companies are able to pick and chose and have AB's applying for OS spot- captains applying for mate spot-etc.

For example- Cruisewest- I've applied here 5 times- have an employee referral- and have worked the same types of ships in the same ports/locks- yet they they keep re-advertising...

I guess I need to take this as a challenge- get all the classes I can- and try to become better via upgrading. There are lots of folks looking for work- the only way to get it is to be persistent- and work on bettering one's self.

I doubt that a company officer would require a person to be a master or mate.

When the Euro was at its strongest (E1.48=$1) that was fair but not great. Now that the Euro is weak again (Euro1.27=$1) the equivalent is $385/day which for an unlimited DPO with all the papers very poor for a North American or European and most likely for all other nationalities as well.

I'd take a pass considering it was having to go to West Africa to work....yeeaccchh

Love that job description for an A/B's duties:

"Measures depth of water in shallow or unfamiliar waters, using lead line, and telephones or shouts information to bridge"

I can just see a guy up on the bow goin into Belle Pass yelling "by the deep six!" as the boat creeps in at 1/2 a knot!

Do these people even have a fraction of a clue?!?

Btw, they are another blacklist company for using furrin mariners in the Gulf...their Epic Diver has many non US crew!

Who was looking for a NOAA officers job? Argo?

NOAA, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, under the U.S. Department of Commerce, is home to one of the Nation's seventh uniformed service-The NOAA Commissioned Corps. The officers of the NOAA corps command NOAA's research and survey vessels and operate aircraft. In a typical career, a NOAA Corps officer is involved in duties such as serving aboard a hydrographic, fisheries, or oceanographic research ship; scuba diving; conducting fish and marine mammal surveys; environmental satellite operations, and engineering field work; research at one of NOAA’s numerous lab facilities across the country; or flying into the eye of a hurricane.
    Requirements:
The NOAA Corps offers commissions to selected applicants who are U.S. citizens, hold a baccalaureate or higher degree in science, math or engineering, meet the entry requirements, and pass the required physical examination. Candidates are commissioned as ensigns and, after successful completion of a Basic Officer Training Class, report to a NOAA ship for their first assignment.
Basic Officer Training Classes (BOTC) are held in February and August. Selections for these classes are made 3 months prior to the beginning of the class, so inquiries should be made in a timely fashion. The NOAA Corps' physical standards include excellent health, normal color vision, and uncorrected visual acuity no worse than 20/400 in each eye, correctable to 20/20. Candidates must PASS a complete military physical.
The NOAA Corps Recruiting Unit is located in Silver Spring, Maryland.
