    Captains and mates-

I was reading professional mariner at the new stand at Pike Place Market.

American Cruise Lines americancruiselines.com is advertising for captains and mates. They mentioned that ex Navy/Coast Guard are encouraged to apply- and that you must like interacting with the public- talking/joking etc.

    They have 2 new small-ships

1- The Independence- will be doing east Coast Cruises

2- The sternwheeler "Queen of the West" which will sail to/from Portland Oregon on the Willamette, Columbia, and Snake Rivers. The Queen was my second boat- it's pretty nice- but small quarters unless you are an officer. Beautiful Scenery- and you can get a little shore time most days.

Also- almost always hiring for deckhands, stewards, cooks, dishwashers, bartenders- etc.

Lastly- I was at Fisherman's Terminal in Seattle yesterday. There's a bulletin board there- good place to posted a resume as there are hundreds of boats moored nearby The offices for American Safari Cruises www.amsafari.com are there too. These are more like small "adventure yachts" and would be a cool- if not the best paying- gig for a Summer

Any idea approximately how much these guys pay a captain. I have a friend who worked there a long time ago but haven't seen him in years. If I am correct you only need a 100 ton license so my license would be overkill but for the lowered stress level it would be worth it if the pay was at least semi-attractive.

Capitan1962- not sure- if you find out please share with the class

I know a bit about their small ship competition's pay-My old company paid 3M $240 to start (OS $120) and that's probably a little higher than Cruisewest- they told me OS pay is $110. I overheard one of my captains on the Empress mention he made $500 a day- but that was a little larger of a ship.. doubt American pays that much...

The fact that you mentioned lower stress levels is a good sign. I've had captains who LOVED being a cruise captain- and others who had to fake it.

You not only have the normal duties- and the lives of a lot of people in your hands- but also unique challenges-

1-Crew- much larger than a regular ship- and many are young, have never been on the water, and never had a "real" job. You have to play counselor when there's an issue. As you are in port a lot- alcohol becomes a BIG issue. There's a lot of crew turnover

2- You have the hotel department to deal with- hotel manager, cruise director, larger galley staff, housekeepers, bartenders- etc

3- SOLAS- extra duties- such as the pre embarkation drill.

4- Not only are you captain and counselor- but you're usually expected to hosts dinners, bridge tours, etc. You MUST be a people person- or a good actor.

5- Hate crew change day? Magnify it by 10! Trash, guests, luggage, and crew off- water, stores, crew, passengers, and luggage on- within a few hours. OH- and the entire ship has to be cleaned too

I love working on cruiseships- but it's not for everyone...

I would have no problem with any of the PR stuff. their website says no positions available but gives you the option of filling out an application. I have done enough online applications which I think many of them don't even get read.

I think there may be a position open. YOU need- mmc/twic/passport- and if you have bst and crowd control- tat helps a lot.

All entry level (AB and down) people start out as steward- then can apply for higher positions after a while- if qualified.

You work 7 days on and 7 days off- usually 12 hours a day.

This is a union (IBU) job and pays very well considering you'll be washing dishes, cleaning cabins, etc.

    PM me for more info.
I just got a call from amhs as well. Said they could hire me on as a steward then put me on deck as an os. I have my ab limited, twic and bst. Problem is like so many I read about here is no rfpnw. They told me as an os they could help me get it. Has anyone else gone this route? And does anyone have any comments about working for the alaska marine highway?
