Headhunters Question

A friend of mine has been looking for a job for a few months and was finaly contacted by a headhunter company. They said they found a job for him but want 2 weeks of his pay paid out over 10 payperiods? Is the two weeks standard?

I thought there was some law that headhunters could not charge a prospective marine employee, they had to charge the EMPLOYER ONLY.........I thought I read that somewhere, I could be wrong.

yeah i had heard of 10 percent.... 14 days seems pretty rough.

(b) A person demanding or receiving from a seaman or an
individual seeking employment as a seaman, remuneration for
providing the seaman or individual with employment, is liable to
the Government for a civil penalty of not more than $5,000.

Sec. 10505. Advances

(a)(1) A person may not -
(A) pay a seaman wages in advance of the time when the seaman
has earned the wages;
(B) pay advance wages of the seaman to another person; or
(C) make to another person an order, note, or other evidence of
indebtedness of the wages, or pay another person, for the
engagement of seamen when payment is deducted or to be deducted
from the seaman's wage.
(2) A person violating this subsection is liable to the United
States Government for a civil penalty of not more than $5,000. A
payment made in violation of this subsection does not relieve the
vessel or the master from the duty to pay all wages after they have
been earned.
(b) A person demanding or receiving from a seaman or an
individual seeking employment as a seaman, remuneration for
providing the seaman or individual with employment, is liable to
the Government for a civil penalty of not more than $5,000.
(c) The owner, charterer, managing operator, agent, or master of
a vessel seeking clearance from a port of the United States shall
present the agreement required by section 10502 of this title at
the office of clearance. Clearance may be granted to a vessel only
if this section has been complied with.
(d) This section does not apply to a fishing or whaling vessel or
a yacht.

from what i understand that is kinda normal. other guys have posted on here, and its probably true with an exception, that you can find the same jobs (if not more) by doing your own leg work, there are reasons the companies are using headhunters, anything from really crappy boats to crappy crew and low pay, and they cant find/keep quality guys. the exception, from what i have been told by many guys, is Kelly sweeny up in the seattle area. 1-360-678-3350. i have talked with him a few times, seems like a stand up guy. he has found some good work for a few buddies of mine.it sucks but just start calling and emailing companies, make that the job until you find a job.

This has been a topic of discussion many times on this forum and so far there really is no clear answer. "Headhunters" have worked for some and not others. Recently I was discussing this issue with Bernadette Kenny of Sound Consulting, a firm that provides executive coaching, and sales and marketing support. Bernadette has served as senior vice president of human resources for Adecco Group North America, a division of Adecco SA, the world’s largest staffing and workforce solutions company and, previously, she was executive vice president, chief global sales and marketing officer for Adecco’s subsidiary Lee Hecht Harrison, well known for its leadership in the outplacement field. Her response is below.

There have been postings that ask for advice on "paying a recruiter." The short answer is no. There is generally no need to do so. Isn't the bigger question determining if the recruiter is friend or foe? People who work in the recruiting business are generally nice people. They are in the business because they have good sales skills, good phone skills, and like the commissions they receive for placements. 99 percent of the time, their fees are paid for by the employing company, not by the job seeker. So the recruiter works for the company, not you. The recruiter does not act as your agent. Your interests are important only if they meet the goals of the employing company. The recruiter does play a critical "gatekeeper" role and the job seeker should treat the recruiter with honesty, respect and diligence. They can become a friend and speak well on your behalf if you are professional, and demonstrate interest in the employer. If a recruiter asks for a fee, gently push back and ask the recruiter what the fee is that they will obtain from the employer (can be from 10% to 25% or more of the annual compensation of the job.) Personally, I would never think of paying a recruiter out-of-pocket. If a company doesn't want to do the leg work of recuiting, they hire a firm like faststream to do it for them, on there own dime. As a job seeker, paying out-of-pocket is really just paying someone to do YOUR own leg work.
