Job Opening: Manager of Marine Operations
Responsibilities
The University of Washington’s School of Oceanography has a position available for Manager of Marine Operations. This individual is responsible for organizing and overseeing the operation of the School of Oceanography’s two federally owned research vessels, the R/V Thomas G. Thompson and R/V Clifford A. Barnes. These vessels are a component of the UNOLS (University National Oceanographic Laboratory System) national academic research fleet. The Manager leads the shore-based Marine Operations staff in providing support to faculty-led research and academic endeavors. The Manager serves as a liaison with the federal agencies to keep them informed and to negotiate funding for ship operations, repairs, and equipment, and as a liaison with ship operators from other institutions. Responsibilities include preparing proposals requesting funds for ship operations and equipment, and providing fiscal oversight to ensure operations within the established budgets.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and minimum of ten years of vessel management; operations and scheduling; ship construction, maintenance and repair; budget development; fiscal management and personnel administration. Complete familiarity with the various requirements of cognizant regulatory bodies concerned with research vessel operation. A commitment to supporting oceanographic research and education and familiarity with the various national oceanographic research programs being underwritten by Federal agencies.
