    Exclamation East Coast 2/2 jobs?

    Capt's,

I'm looking for a job on the east coast on a harbor tug (z-drive). I live in Wilmington, NC and would like drive to/from work. I'd take a job as an AB.

Good luck with finding a job in the NE. KSea just layed off some people and I heard that Penn Maritime layed up a couple of boats...Try Bouchard or Buchanon (SP?) the rock haulers usually start in spring

Everything is hard to get into these days. My company bouchard isn't really doing anything as far as hiring goes but I can say they havnt tied up a boat or sent pple home. That's more that I can say for most companies. Also I have a good friend that works with bucannan for the last couple years. Since he doest have "senority" they lay him off for a couple months every year. Good luck on your search. I'm sure your not alone.

If I'm not mistaken, Buchanan was absorbed into K-Sea (bought out) a couple of years ago. K-Sea has lost a lot of business with shipping down, they do a lot of bunkering work. No ships, no bunker work. Vane Brothers is poised to come in and give them some competition if they are able to get the required exemptions from the USCG to bring their non-ocean classed barges up from Philadelphia.

I'm fairly certain that no one in NY Harbor is hiring anyone new (Deck, Captains, Mates). I hear that Moran hasn't laid anyone off but Reinauer, Penn, and K-Sea have. It's a blood bath over at McAllister.

Good luck, but in the mean time, hold on to what you've got.

Buchanan didn't get bought out by K-Sea, they just use them occasionally to move barges around the harbor. K-Sea has laid off a bunch of people & I left Mac after being furlowed a few times, & come to work & they tie a boat for a day to save a nickel. Hopefully the union gets voted in over @ Mac & they make things better.

Buchanan did not get bought out by k-sea. The last company k-sea bought out or atleast bought boats from was roerig forgive my spelling.

captainbry - Thanks for the correction. So much flying around the harbor right now it's hard to keep some of it straight. I knew K-Sea had acquired one of the company's that hauled rock and was more familiar with Buchanan than Roerig.

Tugted - The union may be able to provide some stability for the guys, but that's about it. I don't see things improving necessarily. McAllister will be very vindictive if the union gets voted in (they've already shown these colors). If McAllister does something that is illegal under NLRB, which they will, the guys will have to wait until court action is taken and concluded before getting any relief. That isn't going to keep a roof over their families heads or food in their bellies in the mean time.

If the union doesn't get voted in, the cuts and abuses will continue with a vengeance due to the threat of voting the union in.

Pretty much a no win situation for the guys at McAllister.

It seems that my fear was justified. I’ve been replaced. Went to school (1600-ton prep) during my time off, and then ready to return to sea found out I had been replaced. Great! Now unemployed I’d like to find something closer to home so that I can save on my travel costs. It would be nice to find a job on the East Coast where I’m not considered “foreign” and I don’t “speak funny” to the locals.

Good luck bro, about the only job I know on a boat in that neck of the woods now is maybe a deckhand on a snapper boat and with the new government enforced regulations they are having to throw back about half of what they catch. Before long that's where I will be so if you run out of beanie weenies it might be an option. I'm down to my last case.

Advice about going fishing probably isn't the best for a seafarer with credentials.
Most agencies are trying to get commercial fishermen to at least get M.M.Ds.
Ports like Gloucester and New Bedford are stunned by the new sector regs.
Scallopers seem to be holding their own but it remains to be seen for how long.

Try and stay away from fishing guys. Yes it is a job and yes you can make a quick buck. But on the downside the only positions I've heard of on dragged are deckhands and if your lucky enough to land a job especially on a clam boat you get paid by the bushel. That's had work.

I refrained from critiquing the referenced links because I didn't want to be obnoxious. If you wish I can be convinced to change my mind quite easily and I can assure you I would not go to the extent that Anthony did to provide you with anything that resembles 'constructive criticism'.

Might I suggest you leave well enough alone.

Believe me, we've all seen the links. All five links, in a half dozen places on gCaptain.
