It is in our interest to help prevent these groundings by reporting unusual or inconsistent soundings to the appropriate hydrographic agency!
I once touched an uncharted rock in an area where the charted soundings were around 12 fathoms. Back in port, I was discussing the incident with the captain of another ship. He asked me to show me where it happened. When he pulled out his chart the rock was noted in pencil exactly where I touched. He said he had no idea where the information came from, but they obviously did not report it. The correction appeared in the NTM less than one month after I reported it.
We all owe it to one another to share this type of information!
