Why on earth would anyone pay to ride on one of these fail scows.

Carnival is the WalMart of the cruise industry.

Excellent comparison! Your right about that- just a glorified gambling boat. Embarrassed to see Americans wearing bibbies and work boots on the Holiday out of Mobile a few years ago. If I'm inclined to ever take a cruise it wont be carnival.

Not like things used to be. There's no more red white and blue stacks screaming across the North Atlantic at 34 knots with proud hard working American mariners at the helm and being driven at light speed by fire-pissing, de-regulated Iowa-class Battleship turbines. Nope, all the glory that was once the American passenger service is rusting away tragically at a slip in Philadelphia. And Carnival is an American company too! How dare they hire primarily Greeks and Italians! The tea-party oughtta go down to Miami and give them the what-fer!

I would think about taking a cruise with my wife. A Master I worked with a few years back (who had been on a few cruises and enjoyed them) pointed out to that as crazy as it seems to pay good money to go on a ship in your time off to relax, it was very different sitting on your balcony with you beverage of choice leaving port and not being the guy responsible for the whole operation. That being said, I would never in my right mind cruise on a Carnival ship. They always appeared to be a bottom feeder in the cruise industry. Talking with an instructor who routinely teaches BRM to all the cruise ship company bridge crews (and has ridden all the different brands in the course of that employment) he said he would go Royal Caribbean and avoid Carnival like the plague.

As much as the damn Norwegians annoy me, and they most certainly do, I would probably have a hard time turning my nose up at Royal Caribbean. I traveled on that behemoth the Oasis in 2010, and while I personally think it was a waste of a cruise because I didn't feel like I was on a ship at any point, it was a very comfortable ship and the company has a very good safety record, to the best of my knowledge.

If one day I decide to make a cruise, I will make it on a ship from Regent Seven Seas Cruises or Silver Sea Cruises. I have had the chance to pilot many of them and I can assure you that it is something different. Class, beauty, competency and hospitality. Not so big vessels so you can meet very interesting people who has other objective than Eat All You Can & Play Mini Pot.

I took a free cruise on the Crystal Symphony last fall. One of the engine would not start. So I had the dinner, then the suite with a balcony and the breakfast before being canceled. What a nice cruise it was !

Fraqrat, you should go on that cruise with your wife.

Ah, the Independence. She and the Constitution were two of the most beautiful ships afloat in their time. I'm sure that more than a few people will disagree with me, but I'm ok with that. Thus is the tragedy of passenger ships: so beautiful, and yet such a disaster to work on. I found that out the hard way... I was heart broken.

I sailed on both when they were the QUEEN OF BERMUDA and the BERMUDA STAR, owned by Bermuda Star Lines of New Jersey. They were excellent vessels at sea. Strongly built. I loved the experience.

But again, no american officers on board ...
