That's pretty kind actually. My captain doesn't consider them officers at all and has a very low regard for him. What is particularly ironic about this is that he has a 3rd engineer's license as well as his masters, although he's never sailed as an engineer.

A good Captain will have the highest respect for his engineers (assuming he has good engineers). There is a reason an engine room can take control away from the bridge, but the bridge cannot take control away from an engine room.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com

I get along with most of the engineers I sail with, but there was one who was a particular SOB that was pretty sure he could do both of our jobs. So, one day I decided to put his money where his mouth was and told him he was going to be docking the boat. Wind was howling at about 20, gusting to 35 off the dock, rain pelting down. In other words, a pretty typical crappy SE Alaska day. I never had so much fun watching that poor bastard try to look like he wasn't scared to death while making a proper muckery out of the whole deal. After the 4th failed attempt, I tapped him on the shoulder and asked if I could have this dance. He stepped aside, bitching the whole time about how he was 'almost there', but I gotta tell you, he never gave me me any more grief about how he could do both of our jobs. I stay outta his engine room and he stays outta my pilothouse.

I don't stay away from his engineroom, actually I go there a lot during coffeebreak.
After all, I am responsible for the whole ship, and it doesn't stop at the door of
the engine room.

Think we see it more as a partnership.

I think it really depends on the people and how much they can be trusted. We have some great engineers on board, and from what I can tell the Captain respects their opinions. I think the best relationships are based on the fact that the Captain knows the management and maneuvering of the vessel, while the engineer knows the propulsion and machinery. If both parties respect that the other is the expert in their field, and take their opinions on said subjects into careful consideration, everyone will get along just fine.

That's pretty cute. I was going to make a suggesiton about the writer's English, but as he is obviously not a native speaker of the tongue.

One thing that he missed (probably because he works on a dredge) and that is the size of the engine department on ocean going vessels has been shrinking. As noted above, however, the better the relationship between the Captain and engineer, the happier the vessel, over all. I found it to be my experience. Even when I was sailing with a captain that I may not have gotten along with all the time, I almost always had their respect and that made things run smoothly. If there was a problem in the operation of any machinery, I was very careful to fully explain the problem (in small words) and why it would take either a lot of time or shore side support to make the repairs.
