Yes,

I just found out yesterday that I am going to be there. Has anyone been to this seminar before or one like it. What should I expect?

If you want to attend a sale presentation of what products and services that Kongsberg has to offer then you should attend one of these seminars. It served many purposes. One to put a face with some names we may all be familiar with. To familiarize yourself with Kongsberg's core values and vision. To ask questions and get the opinions of experts in each function. One for Seatex, one for HiPAP, one for training, etc. There were product development presentations. The turn out was less than expected. I was told that 18 people had cancelled a few days prior to the event and that 8 people just didn't show. Even though the number of attendees was low, it seemed there was a good showing of drilling contractors. Transocean, Pride, Maersk, Seadrill, Diamond. Also, some vessel operators to include HOS, Trico, Abdon Callais, Crossmar, Laborde Marine, Seacor. There were also some other players, including Oceaneering, Offshore Marine Consultants, Secunda Marine, BP, and Nautilus consultants. It was very interesting to be able to meet with the different operators and be able to question the Kongsberg representatives about their product lines and available upgrades for their systems and how those upgrades can help our existing station keeping capabilities and especially the recommended maintenance of existing equipment. For all those interested in a new inertial aided GNSS solutions (DPS 4D) for DP operations then you really missed out because there are also inertial solutions (HAINs) for the HiPAP 500 that makes an acoustic signal as accurate as DGPS information streaming at 1 second intervals with as much voting weight as a DGPS reference input within the DP system. All joking aside, some parts of the presentations were very interesting. I am glad that I attended and I would encourage anyone that is involved in DP operations or management, that you should attend one of these DP User seminars.

Lunch both days was surprisingly good. The supper (not to be confused with dinner) the first night was nice as well.

A couple of things that came up were MRU's. If you are on a vessel that moves around a lot (pitching and rolling) that you should have your MRU's calibrated evey two to three years. On a vessel like a drilling rig every 4-5 years. I questioned the need for this and the consequences, but did not get a good response. Another items that came up was the need to annually check propulusion feedback and small inaccuracies in positioning. Talked about antennaes and connectors. Of course the annual rebuild requirements on your gyro's. There is also another type gyro that does not require annual maintenance. A Fiber optic Gyro (C-Plath) maintenance free. You may want to consider changing out one of the traditional gyro's with one of these. One thing of particular interest to drilling contractors is a trainig course called Drillining simulation course. It takes DP operators from drilling rigs and runs them through worst case scenarios in a controlled environment. Minimum of four persons for this class max of 6. The thing is if your company pays for this class they are paying for 6 people whether or not 4 or 5 attends, the charge is for 6. They also talked about a HiPAP Cymba System and new transponder coming out that do not have to be put into LBL or SSBL like the ones most of us use today. They are in the testing phase now on a few vessels, but should be made available early 2010. For those of you that are having problems with your release mechanisms staying locked on you MPT331 transponders they will be replacing the existing release mechanisms with a new design. I know I have had a few problems with these. Not releasing unexpectedly. I just could not get them to lock back once I tested them on deck. There is also a transponder to measure sea current and riser angle through the HiPAPA transceiver that will display information on the HiPAP screen as well as your Riser Management Screen (RMS). I found that particularly interesting. There was a lot of good information there, especially for someone like me that is pretty new to the drilling side and semi's in general. If you are really involved in DP especialy Kongsberg, then I would recommend attending one of these seminars at least once in every 5 years. Kongsberg is committed to supporting their customers and are expanding in Houston and New Orleans. You could also just come for the free lunch like Anchorman. They also gave out free hats and polo shirts.
