    Default Cal Maritime Classroom enviorment

Just got excepted to cal maritime for fall 2012 and was wondering how is the classroom environment like?

Do you need to bring laptops to every class?

    Thanks

Hahahaha, classic, the GMDSS teacher was always alright, I never did get all the details on that incident. No, you don't need to bring laptops to every class. There is nothing real special about the classes, unless you're in Ship Ops or some other hands on type class where you'll be in your work uniform. Textbooks, paper, pens and pencils, just like a normal school. Your speling and grammer tell me you will fit right in with most of the other deckies.

I'm just poking fun. To tell the truth I failed one class in high school: English. It was my junior year, right after I was introduced to weed, go figure. Good luck at CMA Luke.

Luke, What's your major? I'm currently in my second year at CMA. Lap tops are not required, and some teachers don't let you have them in class since they know most the cadets would be on Facebook, or hopefully at least Gcaptain.
Are you transferring or coming straight from high school?

What's up Jeremy. Thanks for the info. I'm actually transferring and got accepted to the MT program. What major are you in?

Also how are the classes like for first year students? Morning till night classes? Assuming that students take 12 units or more.

I'm an MT major as well. By far the best major there is.
Classes aren't that bad your first year. I think my first semester freshman year I was there for full days on Monday and Wednesday, half day on Friday, and Tuesday/Thursday were lab classes for me. Super chill. Depending on how many units your transferring in, you might want to consider taking a few sophomore classes as well. A lot of us transfer students graduate in 3 or 3-1/2 years.
Any other question just ask. I don't check here every day, but I'll try and check more often to help you out.

I am a 2010 grad and the classroom environment at CMA can be good depending on the teacher and in most of the major classes people arenʻt too disruptive. Now the humanities, english,ETC is a whole other monster the classes are a joke and no one pays any attention. Also i graduated MT and had some trouble finding a steady job right out of school and if i could have done it over i probably would have gone ME or MET because engineers are just so much more in demand both at sea and shoreside. I am just happy that the gulf began to pick up and i was able to get on a DP boat and get this training. Who knows what will await you guys in 2-4 years hopefully the gulf and drilling will continue to pick up so there will be enough jobs for all of us. Good luck with CMA its a good choice I donʻt think you will be disappointed. Oh yeah and dont sniff any of Mr. Saarheims "intoxicating vapors" because he will probably try and Fellate you.. I knew there was something off about that guy......

so, you have most, if not all, of your general Ed classes out of the way? That's definitely a good start. Are you coming to the accepted student preview whenever they have it this spring?

Just a heads up, they are revamping the 3 3-1/2 year thing. We struggled to get through how we did as transfer students. They will push back on you and say shit like, "oh this program is not intended for a 3 year completion..... It states that on our website." but they only tell you that AFTER you are attending the school. Make sure you plan your classes from freshmen year to graduation the moment you finish O Week. The MT department chair has to sign shit that allows you to proceed with the natural progression of a transfer students curriculum. If he doesn't sign, you can't take certain classes you need to progress with a three year track. I know any transfer students reading this will recognize the battle we had to fight. For some people it wasn't a problem. For many of us however, it was an hill fight all the way until the day I passes my 3rd mates exams. I seem to have earned their respect finally.....

Just to follow up on Pikuptruk as I was involved in this battle, my understanding from several administrators and faculty members is they will be requiring all students to sign a letter of understanding that this is a four year program and they have no guarantee of anything other then that.
