You need STCW-OICNW. Go to the mptusa.com website. there is a nice flow chart and list of requirments. If Ft. Lauderdale is too far I'm sure any of the other schools east/west coast & GOM would be glad to assist. Also you can look on the USCG website for the requirements. Some of these you already have and some may not be required but this is the list for OICNW.

    Practical Assessments
    1) Radar Observer .................................................. ...........5 days
    2) Advanced Fire Fighting .................................................. .5 days
    3) ARPA .................................................. ..........................4 days
    4) GMDSS .................................................. ......................10 days
    5) Terrestrial & Coastal Navigation .....................................10 days
    6) Deck Officer – General Subjects & Rules Exam Prep ...........5 days
    7) Celestial Navigation .................................................. .....15 days
    8) Medical Care Provider .................................................. ...3 days
    9) Basic Meteorology .................................................. ........5 days
    10) Watch keeping and BRM ..............................................10 days
    11) Visual Signaling/Emergency/SAR ...................................5 days
    12) Basic Ship Stability & Construction .................................5 days
    13) Cargo Handling & Stowage ...........................................5 days
    14) Magnetic & Gyro Compass Course ..................................3 days
    15) Electronic Navigation .................................................. ..5 days
    16) Basic Ship Handling & Steering Control ..........................5 days

Got the list for STCW-OICNW. You have to go to school for this and then take the CG exam as well?? Does a 500-1600 prep course count??

Tell me if I am wrong but isn't the uscg getting rid off the smaller licenses? Ie. The 100 200 and 500gt license? When I took my license just a couple months ago that's what they told me. The prep course for the 1600gt license that Mpt offers is absolutly excellent. I took it there and passed the test up in ny the first time. The instructor sea g as she is known as is amazing at what she knows and how she teaches the class.

Doesn't the OICNW list apply to the mates license and not the masters license? Not sure what the OP was upgrading from/to.....but I thought the OICNW courses are for mates tickets?

This thread explains the proposed changes to the licensing scheme, but essentially, the 200 ton license will remain and the 500 ton license will go away, although not for current 500 ton license holders.

You probably haven't had any responses to your query because this is a complicated issue. NMC has changed their interpretation of Policy Letter 01-02.

It used to be that someone upgrading straight to 500 ton Master did not have to complete the OICNW training or assessments that are required by 01-02 for 500/1600/3rd Mate licenses. A loophole, if you will.

However, it seems as though lately NMC might be requiring 500/1600 Master candidates who do not currently have STCW OICNW to complete the full OICNW training and assessments. Read a thread on this subject here.

Either way, it would probably be a good idea to submit your application for 500 ton Master as soon as possible, if for no other reason than to get it in before any proposed license changes take place.

Pacificap, you are in the exact same situation as I am right now.

I intentionally have skipped over the 500 GRT mate, and will be applying for 500 master in order to avoid the added burden of OICNW. It has been a gray area for some time now, and with each question I get answered, several more pop up......

If you look at 500 GRT mates checklists, one of the "other requirements" is OICNW modules......compare that to the 500 GRT MASTERS checklist, and under other requirements and OICNW is NOT listed.

I have attached the checklist for 500 Master that was recently sent to me from the NMC. For some reason it is not on their website, so I had to ask for it. Once I can find an Advanced firefighting course to fit my schedule, I will be sending in my application and will undoubtedly have some experiences to share.

Attached is the checklist I recently received from NMC for my upgrade from 200 GRT/500 ITC Masters to 500 GRT Masters NC.

Thanks Conspearasea - according to the requirements (if no changes) all I need is the RFPNW assessments. Please keep in touch. Kudos to Danzante and 10talents for all your help.

I'm in the middle of a similar situation. You need to submit your request to the NMC and they will either give you a letter to test or a list of what else you may need. At the present time you are able to go from 200t master to 500t master or 1600 t master as I am, if you have the sea time and tonnage. This will change when the new rules are approved.

    skipjackmac,

Have you applied for your upgrade already? I am trying to find out how much time you have to turn in course certificates once they have evaluated your app. I have heard that the time was cut down from 1 year to 90 days, but have yet to have that verified. During my last renewal in 2007, I was given a letter that gave me a year to finish paperwork.

Anyone been through this lately w/ the NMC and have some insight?? I am wanting to go ahead and get my app in, but am missing AFF and FL, and it could be the first of may before I get them in my rotation....

Not to hijack Pacificap, but seems all 3 of us are in the same "boat" here....
