Under Adm Zumwalt in the Carter administration the US Navy’s Minforce was essentially denuded. The losses to commercial and naval shipping in both WWII and WWI caused by mines were monumental compared to all other forms of sinkings. An effective mine force and mine clearing and deterent force to our nation is critical to our national defense both here and abroad. Our national mine force has been long overlooked in favor of more glamerous and macho forms of sea power – a major mistake!
