HOUSTON (Dow Jones)–Chevron Corp. (CVX) said an oil supply vessel off the coast of Nigeria was attacked by pirates, who kidnapped three people.

The ship “was boarded by eight armed pirates who attacked the crew and took three persons hostage,” said Kurt Glaubitz, a spokesman for the oil company, in an email.

The vessel, the MV C-Endeavour, belonging to Edison Chouest Offshore, was attacked Thursday at 8 p.m., Chevron said.

“The incident has been reported to the relevant security agencies including the Nigeria Police and the Joint Security Task Force,” Chevron said.

California-based Chevron is assisting Chouest to ensure the safe release of the kidnapped crew members, the company said.

Chevron is the second-largest U.S. oil company by market value after Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM).

Chevron’s shares were down 63 cents at $99.45 in recent trading.
