What is in store for us? Anybody’s guess really, but with the latest economic and financial measures of stimulus in the US, EU, China and Japan there is ground for at least cautious optimism for the world economy. The 2013 Perspectives in Shipping will endeavour to cast some light on the likely developments in the economic powerhouses, which will be decisive for where the future opportunities will be also for shipping.

A key component to the growth engine is of course energy and the cost of energy to all parts of society. For shipping oil, gas and coal are critical commodities in the energy supply chain, and especially the trade pattern impacting volumes and transport distances. The cost of bunkers obviously impacts shipping cost and unfortunately there is no indication that the trend of increased fuel prices will reverse. The commercial realities for practically all shipping markets have been particularly challenging, but some expect that the difficult market conditions may ease off during 2013. As usual for a cyclical business, the currents will change and carry shipping back into prosperity.

The big question is when and where! Although any prediction is associated with a wide spectrum of uncertainties, these crucial issues will be the focus of debate between leading economists and industry leaders at BIMCO’s AGM and Perspectives in Shipping conference in Paris on 28 May 2013. The event will be moderated by Julian Bray the Editor-in-Chief of TradeWinds.

This event follows the GeoMaritime 2012 conference where John Allan, VP of Global Sales, presented a keynote paper on ‘Completing the Picture with A Global View of Maritime Traffic: Advances in Detection and Applications’.

Kicking-off the event week, the Nor-Shipping Opening Conference captures the audience’s attention with hot-topic presentations by industry leaders and lively roundtable discussions with their peers. Next Generation Shipping is the theme, as future opportunities are explored from multiple angles.

Offshore

In acknowledgement of the important role offshore shipping plays in the global maritime industry, Nor-Shipping established Agenda Offshore in 2011. The conference presents this growing segment’s newsmakers with a stage to highlight and debate its issues and opportunities. It is natural that such an event be held in Norway – today home to the world’s second largest fleet of offshore vessels.

Marine Finance

Maritime investors, along with entrepreneurs and growth companies, are part of the maritime value chain. The new initiative Nor-Shipping Venture increases the synergies between them by providing finance professionals and capital hungry maritime companies the opportunity to pair up, network and showcase themselves.

Awards

To further encourage quality work and to profile role models, Nor-Shipping has long supported the public recognition of industry excellence.

A New Generation

Young professionals are an integral part of the Nor-Shipping mix, and this will be visible like never before at the 2013 event. Along with the energy enterprise pyramid offshore oil and gas exploitation, the global offshore market regained and accelerates milder and development of OSV market. It is prospected that the demand of OSV in the global especially in Southeast Asia will witness growth over the next five years. The market expected will order level from about 400 OSV ships annually.  Additionally OSV industry is not only put forward to the higher technical challenges, but also to the new industry rules.

Current OSV fleet may not be sufficient in meeting demand due to charterers’ increasingly demanding requirements, and the push for younger and “greener” vessels by regulators.
