Yet unlike how they responded in 2009\, by withdrawing significant capacity\, only a few strings have so far been pulled\, in what looks increasingly like an all-out play by big carriers to drive smaller ones out of the market. Already a number of smaller transpacific lines have withdrawn\, established lines like MISC say they will exit liner shipping\, and there’s been renewed talk of a merger of Japanese carriers. All of which begs the pressing question: What will 2012 look like? Could it bring a new round of consolidation? Analysts are downbeat on rate trends\, but the market has and can surprise- January\, 2010 is still a fresh and painful memory for many shippers.
