SUMMARY:Posidonia 2012 - International Shipping Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The largest gathering of the international shipping community\, the 2012 Posidonia International Shipping Exhibition is a global marketplace for maritime products and services. Welcomed by the Greek shipping community Posidonia continues as the global marketplace for ship builders\, suppliers of ships’ equipment and shipping-related services. In 2012 Posidonia relocates to the exciting Metropolitan Expo Centre located within the Athens International Airport complex. This state of the art exhibition centre\, the largest exhibition venue in Greece\, provides a flexible and functional environment for Posidonia and its exhibitors and visitors. Allowing Posidonia and its exhibitors to realize their full potential. Posidonia will bring you close to the Greek shipping market\, which in the wake of the world financial crisis\, continues investing in newbuildings and upgrading its fleet. Despite the fact that the number of ships on order at world shipyards is down\, the Greek portion continues to be high and at the beginning of spring 2011\, over 600 ships were contracted for Greek interests giving them a fleet all-told of 3\,850 ships of a total 261.7m deadweight. It is estimated that over $50bn is committed to ship newbuilding projects as the age of the Greek-controlled fleet continues to drop well below the world average. Hence\, Posidonia 2012 not only continues as the global marketplace for ship builders\, suppliers of ships’ equipment and shipping-related services\, but will provide the great Posidonia experience in a state of the art new venue.

SUMMARY:LNG Carrier Design, Construction, and Operations [SEMINAR]
DESCRIPTION:Gas carrier design and operational issues on agenda at ABS Doha seminar Classification society ABS will host a seminar covering developments in the design\, construction and operation of liquefied gas carriers in Doha\, Qatar\, on 19 March 2012. The seminar will provide owners\, operators\, designers and associated personnel with an update on issues relating to the construction and operation of LNG and LPG carriers. ABS Environmental Solutions Group Director Sean Bond and ABS Pacific Division Training Manager Raffaele Piciochi will address recent developments in the design and approval of gas cargo containment systems as well as sloshing and fatigue assessment issues from a classification society perspective. In addition\, ABS Vice President for Gas Projects Patrick Janssens will discuss feedback experiences on equipment and dual-fuel engines. Session topics include LNG carrier analysis and assessment\, LNG carrier-terminal interface\, aspects of LPG carrier construction and LPG cargo handling and operations. The latest regulatory updates relating to gas carriers also will be discussed. ABS Regional Vice President\, Middle Eastern Region\, Joseph Brincat says the seminar will be of interest to all those who need to be informed of recent developments in this fast-moving sector. “As LNG becomes a more attractive fuel for power generation\, increased demand will require the construction of more liquefied gas carriers to support both LNG and LPG projects\,” he says. “As transport demand increases\, so do the challenges for designers and builders of these ships as well as for their owners and operators.” In particular\, the cargo versatility of LPG carriers presents a challenge from a safety and handling standpoint. Requirements for safe cargo handling operations as well as the interface between both LNG and LPG carriers and loading/unloading terminals also will be considered. The seminar will take place in the Doha Marriot\, Doha\, Qatar\, on 19 March 2012\, between 09:00 and 12:15. Attendance is free. Complimentary refreshments and lunch will be served. To register for the seminar\, please email: absdoha@eagle.org

SUMMARY:Global Conference on Oceans, Climate and Security
DESCRIPTION:The predicted effects of climate change over the coming decades include extreme weather events\, drought\, flooding\, sea level rise\, retreating glaciers\, habitat shifts\, and the increased spread of life-threatening diseases. These conditions have the potential to disrupt societies around the world and force nations to change the way they keep populations safe and secure. The Conference on Oceans\, Climate and Security (GCOCS) will examine the conditions that are likely to be produced by climate change\, how these conditions will affect coastal and ocean ecosystems and communities\, and how they may affect human and national security interests. GCOCS will focus on three specific themes examining the overall problem from different perspectives with a unified goal of understanding how to mitigate the effects that we can control and adapt to those that we cannot. The three tracks are: Track 1: Raising Visibility and Fostering Literacy Track 2: Science and Technology Needs Track 3: Security Policy & Governance Implications

SUMMARY:Trans-Pacific Maritime Conference
DESCRIPTION:With nearly 1800 attendees this past March\, 2011\, The Journal Of Commerce's (JOC) Trans-Pacific Maritime Conference continues to be a must-attend for transportation and logistics professionals across the Pacific market. JOC is excited about the upcoming 2012 TPM on March 5-6 in Long Beach\, Calif. Not only can you expect a significant networking opportunity with your industry colleagues\, but also an in-depth look at the current situation of the industry through two days of panels\, roundtables and speeches. Headline Topic: Container market outlook for 2012: further into the abyss or an unexpected recovery? This year\, 2011\, did not turn out how carriers hoped or expected. Following the historic comeback year of 2010\, this year took a more sobering turn early on as weak volumes encountered a fleet replenished with previously idled vessels and new deliveries of ever larger mega ships. The results were predictable. As what should have been the peak season period got under way\, volumes were tepid\, surcharges were delayed and\, and rates plunged. Carriers are now looking at 2011 as another year of multi-billion dollar losses. Yet unlike how they responded in 2009\, by withdrawing significant capacity\, only a few strings have so far been pulled\, in what looks increasingly like an all-out play by big carriers to drive smaller ones out of the market. Already a number of smaller transpacific lines have withdrawn\, established lines like MISC say they will exit liner shipping\, and there’s been renewed talk of a merger of Japanese carriers. All of which begs the pressing question: What will 2012 look like? Could it bring a new round of consolidation? Analysts are downbeat on rate trends\, but the market has and can surprise- January\, 2010 is still a fresh and painful memory for many shippers. By March the picture will have clarified considerably and we will take a sober view on what the year looks like. Event Video
