Design and engineering companies Deltamarin and Elomatic have signed a large scale engineering contract with German shipbuilder MV Werften for the design of a giant Global Class cruise ship.

The contract was signed July 28 and includes large parts of the basic and detailed design of the vessel. The contract is the largest for both Deltamarin and Elomatic, representing 860 man-years. The contract value has not been disclosed.

The “Global Class mega passenger vessel” for cruise line Star Cruises will be the largest passenger ship ever built in Germany and one of the largest ever built worldwide. It will be over 340 meters long, 45 meters wide and have a gross register tonnage of 200,001. The ship order is an important boost for the entire European high-end shipbuilding industry.

The project will last almost 4 years and delivery to Star Cruises is scheduled for 2020.

MV Werften was formed by Genting Hong Kong earlier this year by combining three German shipbuilding facilities in Wismar, Rostock and Stralsund, all located in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The new shipbuilding group will focus on building large and modern cruise ships.

“This is a very significant project for us and shows that our expertise in passenger ship design is highly valued internationally. It will have a long-term positive effect on employment at Deltamarin and we look forward to delivering the high quality technical expert services that such a vessel requires,” says Deltamarin Managing Director, Mika Laurilehto.

The scope of work for Deltamarin and Elomatic includes engineering for the basic and detail design phases in all engineering disciplines. Both companies will also assist the shipyard during the construction with technical site services. The companies, both based in Turku Finland, have extensive experience and know-how in the design of large passenger ships.

“We are very proud that MV Werften has chosen us as a strategic partner and that they have shown faith in us to design passenger vessels of the highest quality. These kinds of demanding projects allow us to showcase our top know-how in this area,” says Elomatic CEO, Patrik Rautaheimo.

“The engineering contract also makes it easier for Finnish suppliers and turnkey companies to participate in this massive project. It is a boost not only for us, but the whole marine cluster in Finland,” continue Laurilehto and Rautaheimo.
