Dear Tracy – I will never forget your call that morning. The 11 men that died and the countless injured all could have been avoided with just a little regard for safety at the right moment. There were far too many opportunities to avoid this that quietly passed. At each opportunity, when analyzed, we now find that $ controlled the thoughts or lack of thoughts. Todd, Jeff and I are humbled at the strength you have shown through this process. Always keeping Karl and Aaron in front of you, your strength inspires us all every day – Steve

I tend to agree that this is the best of both worlds… one DPO with a license another with lots of DP experience (and an engineer down below!). But that’s just my opinion -John

Have to somewhat agree with “Gator” on this one. Most MODUs require two dpos in the control room at all times. If one of them is an OICNW then the other really doesn’t need to be. MODUs do very little transiting and will stay in one field for sometimes years at a time. Workboats are a totally different animal though and transit almost daily.

Just because you can operate a DP System does not mean you can operate a vessel without it but you definitely should know how.

What good will it do to require people to have an OICNW license to operate a DP system? A DP system is nothing more that a control system used for positioning. Once you have met your minimum manning requirements for your vessel, the remainder of personnel should be up to the vessel owner. Just because you are an OICNW doesn’t mean you can operate a DP system.

If it had not been for the strength and friendship that Mr. Steve Gordon gave to me and my family, I do not know of where we would have ended up today. Steve Gordon gave a voice to my husband, Karl Kleppinger, Jr., one of the eleven men which died upon the DWH, when he could not speak for himself. I am honored to call him my friend and family, and so very glad his hard work is being recognized for fighting for those killed and hurt that horrible night.
